SRINAGAR — A somber hush fell over the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Tuesday, as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke from the heart, sharing emotional reflections on his close friend and political confidant, Devender Singh Rana, who recently passed away shortly after securing a BJP ticket in the assembly elections. The grief in Abdullah’s words cut through the chamber, as he painted a poignant picture of their two-decade journey together — a journey defined by loyalty, shared challenges, and mutual respect.

During the assembly’s customary obituary session, where 57 individuals were being remembered, Abdullah paused to address one name in particular, his voice trembling. “There are 57 obituary references today, but I must take a moment to speak about one person who has been a close associate — Devender Singh Rana. He spent nearly two decades of my 26 years in politics by my side.”

In his tribute, Abdullah opened up about how Rana had been an unwavering figure in his political life. Beginning as his media advisor, Rana went on to support Abdullah through various political roles and challenges. “I became the President of the National Conference, and Devender was my media advisor. When I became Chief Minister in 2009, he once again stepped into the role of advisor. Turning his gaze toward the opposition BJP benches, Abdullah acknowledged the journey that had taken Rana across states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Gujarat, where he represented his party with distinction. “You all witnessed it; wherever he was sent — be it Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, or Gujarat — he excelled,” Abdullah remarked, paying respect to Rana’s remarkable adaptability and unyielding loyalty.

Yet, Abdullah’s tribute took on a more personal tone as he revealed a lingering regret, a feeling of something left unresolved. “Today, I regret not realizing how seriously ill he was; I would have sought to mend our relationship. Unfortunately, that opportunity never came, and now, we gather here to pay our tributes,” he lamented, visibly struggling to contain his emotions.
