JAMMU: In a dramatic turn of events, Jammu police on Wednesday evening apprehended self-proclaimed activist Amit Kapoor while he was in the act of demanding and accepting money from a government employee. The arrest followed a complaint by Avinash Kumar, an employee of the Jammu Development Authority (JDA), who accused Kapoor of blackmail and extortion.

According to Kumar, Kapoor had threatened to expose sensitive documents to the media unless he was paid Rs 10 lakh. In a bid to protect his reputation, Kumar initially succumbed to the pressure and paid Kapoor Rs 5 lakh at Manda Zoo last month. However, Kapoor’s demands persisted, with him asking for an additional Rs 5 lakh, prompting Kumar to finally approach the Bus Stand police and file an FIR.

Police swiftly acted on Kumar’s complaint, arresting Kapoor from the Bus Stand area on Wednesday evening. Kapoor was caught red-handed with the cash, leading to his immediate detention. He has been charged under section 387 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) under FIR 31/2024 at the Bus Stand Police Station.
