Jammu: In a surprising turn of events, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir independently, rejecting the Congress-led initiative to forge a grand alliance of all non-BJP parties. This decision marks a significant shift in the political dynamics of the region and underscores the growing rift between the PDP and its erstwhile allies.

The PDP’s decision to go it alone stems from a deep sense of betrayal by the Congress during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Sources within the PDP reveal that the Congress’s decision to prioritize the National Conference (NC) over the PDP has left the party feeling isolated and undermined.

“During the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress leadership openly supported the NC candidates, sidelining the PDP. This betrayal has led us to take a stand to contest the Assembly elections independently,” a senior PDP leader disclosed. This sentiment has resonated across the party ranks, from zone presidents to district presidents, all of whom have cautioned against entering into any alliances that could demoralize the party cadre.

In preparation for the upcoming elections, the PDP leadership has instructed its regional heads to compile panels of potential candidates for all 90 Assembly seats in J&K. This directive underscores the party’s commitment to contesting every seat independently and ensuring a robust electoral campaign.

“The message of fighting the elections alone has already been conveyed to all district presidents. We believe that surrendering some seats to other parties would only weaken our position and demoralize our supporters,” sources added.

To fortify its position and gear up for the elections, the PDP’s Jammu unit convened a crucial meeting on Saturday. Chaired by PDP vice-president Abdul Hameed Choudhary at the party headquarters in Gandhi Nagar, the meeting focused on mobilizing and strengthening the party’s grassroots support across the Jammu region.

“The meeting discussed in detail our preparations for the Assembly elections and the action plan to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. Our goal is to ensure that the PDP remains a formidable force in every constituency,” Choudhary stated.

The PDP’s decision to contest the elections independently highlights the fractures within the proposed non-BJP alliance. While the Congress had hoped to unify all non-BJP parties to present a strong front, the PDP’s exit underscores the challenges of forging such an alliance in a politically volatile region like Jammu and Kashmir.

“The leadership of the PDP is annoyed over the way J&K Congress leadership aggressively campaigned against our candidates. We were expecting a more balanced approach, but the Congress’s actions have left us with no choice but to go solo,” sources within the PDP explained.

As the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir continues to evolve, the PDP’s decision to contest the Assembly elections independently marks a significant development.
