In a series of strategic moves aimed at countering the BJP’s dominance, key players within the INDIA bloc have embarked on a mission to fortify their numbers and secure a more robust opposition alliance. Among the most proactive are the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT), with significant efforts from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
A Dynamic Coalition Strategy
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has been at the forefront of this initiative. On the day of the election results, Banerjee reached out to Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav, urging him to engage with N Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)]. Both Naidu and Kumar have historical ties with the SP, stemming from the United Front days of the 1990s.
Following this, Banerjee’s nephew and TMC senior leader Abhishek Banerjee, alongside party colleague Derek O’Brien, met Yadav in New Delhi to further discuss alliance strategies. The AAP has also expressed its support for expanding the coalition, with leaders Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha meeting with Banerjee and later visiting Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.
Building Bridges in Mumbai
Banerjee and O’Brien then traveled to Mumbai for discussions with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya. This meeting underscored the TMC’s commitment to solidifying the opposition’s unity.
Yadav, reflecting on these efforts, emphasized the importance of maintaining hope and expectations in a democracy. “Governments are being formed by pleasing people, so others can also please,” he remarked. Despite skepticism about immediate changes from Naidu or Kumar, there is consensus on the necessity of keeping the BJP vigilant.
Congress’s Cautious Approach
While the TMC and its allies are pushing for a proactive approach, the Congress remains cautious. Scarred by the missteps of 1999 when Sonia Gandhi’s attempt to form a government faltered due to lack of support, the Congress is wary of premature moves. However, senior leaders acknowledge the need to remain open to alliances with Naidu and Kumar. “Narendra Modi’s BJP ran the government for 10 years. He and his government have been rejected. That is the starting point. We move forward from here,” a senior TMC leader stated.
Emerging Alliances and Expectations
The TMC claims that three newly-elected BJP MPs from West Bengal are in touch with Banerjee, hinting at potential defections. Additionally, Independents like Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Vishal Patil have expressed readiness to support the Congress, bolstering the non-BJP front.
Charting a New Course
The TMC, SP, and Shiv Sena (UBT) emphasize their distinct identities and independent views within the alliance. “There are parties like the SP which has 37 seats, TMC which has 29 and Shiv Sena (UBT) which has 9 seats… And we are not photocopies of other parties,” a leader commented, highlighting the diversity and strength within the INDIA bloc.
As the opposition navigates the complex political landscape, the lessons of 1999 loom large. Yet, with determined efforts and strategic alliances, the INDIA bloc aims to present a formidable challenge to the BJP, keeping the hope for a non-BJP government alive.
