India and Indonesia have agreed to jointly restore the ancient Prambanan Temple, one of the world’s most important Hindu heritage sites.

During his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the nearly 1,000-year-old temple complex with President Prabowo Subianto and offered prayers at the shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. The restoration plan was announced after both countries exchanged a Letter of Intent to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on Java Island, Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex and reflects centuries of cultural connections between India and Southeast Asia. Built in the 9th century, the temple features detailed carvings from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana. The project is expected to strengthen cultural ties while helping preserve a major symbol of shared heritage.
