Jammu and Kashmir have been grappling with continuous rainfall that has wreaked havoc in several regions, including higher altitudes. Torrential downpours in the valley triggered flash floods in parts of Kupwara in northern Kashmir, causing significant damages to buildings and roads. Furthermore, the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district experienced an avalanche on Monday, adding to the challenges faced by the region.
*Rescue Operations and School Closures*
In response to the flood-like situation in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted extensive rescue operations in the affected areas. The heavy rainfall prompted authorities to suspend classes across Kupwara as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students amidst adverse weather conditions.
*National Highway& Mughal Road Blockages*
The critical Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which serves as the primary all-weather route connecting Kashmir with the rest of India, was shut down due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. Landslides at Mehar, Gangroo, Mom Passi, and Kishtwari Pather in Ramban district blocked the highway, impeding efforts to clear debris and restore traffic. Travelers have been advised to avoid using this route until further notice.Additionally, the Mughal road, an alternative route connecting Jammu with Shopian district in south Kashmir, has been closed for the past three days due to snowfall in Peer Ki Gali and surrounding areas.
Avalanche Hits Sonamarg: *No Casualties*
Reported An avalanche struck the Sarbal area of Sonamarg, causing concern among locals. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or financial losses, as the avalanche occurred on the forested side of the region.
*Damage Assessment and Relief Efforts*
The recent heavy rainfall in the Mandi area of Poonch resulted in significant damage to 8-10 houses and several roads.
The local administration has initiated relief measures, including providing tents to affected families and identifying alternate accommodation options.
*Rising Water Levels and IMD Alerts*
Continuous rainfall over the past two days has led to rising water levels in various water bodies across Kashmir, prompting officials to issue danger warnings, particularly for Pohru Nallah in Kupwara.
However, the Jhelum river’s water level remains below the alert mark.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting heavy rains and potential thunderstorms with gusty winds in the region. Similar weather conditions are expected in neighboring states, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in flood-affected and vulnerable areas. Efforts are underway to clear roads, restore essential services, and provide necessary support to affected communities amidst the challenging weather conditions.
