Jammu : In a fiery address during the Assembly session, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary launched a scathing attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators, accusing them of amassing wealth through corrupt practices and betraying the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Choudhary alleged that the BJP’s actions have led to the erosion of democratic values in the region, particularly highlighting the downgrading of the state to a Union Territory (UT).
Allegations of Corruption and Wealth Accumulation:
Choudhary did not mince words as he accused BJP MLAs of exploiting their positions for personal gain. He claimed that these legislators have constructed lavish bungalows, symbolizing the corruption that has become rampant under their tenure. The Deputy CM emphasized that such actions are a direct affront to the principles of democracy and good governance.
Critique of Democratic Processes and State’s Downgrade:
The Deputy CM expressed deep concern over the BJP’s role in the downgrading of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a UT. He described this move as a “murder of democracy,” asserting that it has disenfranchised the people and diluted their political representation. Choudhary argued that this transition has been detrimental to the region’s autonomy and governance.
Electoral Success Attributed to Central Leadership:
Choudhary further contended that the BJP’s electoral victories in the region are not a testament to the local leaders’ credibility but rather a result of the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He suggested that without the Modi factor, BJP candidates would struggle to secure their deposits in elections, indicating a lack of genuine support for the local leadership.
Rising Unemployment and Resource Exploitation:
Highlighting pressing socio-economic issues, the Deputy CM accused the BJP of failing to address rising unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir. He criticized the allocation of industrial lands to outsiders, leading to the closure of local industrial units and loss of livelihoods. Choudhary also raised concerns about the exploitation of natural resources, such as the looting of minerals from the Ravi River by external entities, which has adversely affected local communities.
Call for Accountability and Restoration of Statehood:
Choudhary called for greater accountability and transparency in governance. He urged the central government to fulfill its promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that this is a rightful demand of the people. The Deputy CM stressed that the restoration of statehood is essential for safeguarding the region’s identity and ensuring that the interests of its residents are prioritized.
BJP’s Response:
In response to these allegations, BJP leaders have dismissed Choudhary’s claims as baseless and politically motivated. They assert that the party has been working diligently for the development of Jammu and Kashmir and that any allegations of corruption are unfounded.
The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir remains highly charged, with debates over governance, development, and the region’s political status continuing to dominate public discourse.
