On June 24, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Jammu registered FIR No. 08/2024 against Chanchal Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Jammu & Kashmir Police, for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. This action followed a secret verification that revealed Singh had accumulated substantial moveable and immoveable properties through corrupt practices while holding various lucrative positions.
The investigation uncovered that Singh had acquired properties in his name and in the names of family members and relatives, as well as benami properties. These assets include residential houses, plots, shops, and business establishments across different districts in Jammu province, as well as two hotels in Kullu (Manali), Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, Singh was found to have significant bank balances and valuables.
Search warrants were obtained from the Hon’ble Court, and searches were conducted at the residences and offices of Singh, as well as those of his family members and relatives, located in different districts of Jammu province, Srinagar, and Manali. During these searches, numerous incriminating documents and valuables were seized.
One notable discovery was an agreement to sell dated February 25, 2022, between Ved Parkash of Shimla and Rekha Devi, Singh’s wife. The agreement revealed that Rekha Devi had purchased 12.03 hectares of land in Mohal and Phati Burua Kothi, Kullu, Manali, for Rs. 2.85 crore, with an advance payment of Rs. 50 lakh made through both cheques and cash. Additionally, documents related to benami properties, including a will deed for a significant land parcel, were found during a search in Hatli, Kathua.
The searches at various locations are ongoing as the investigation continues.
