A two-day training cum workshop was held at the Community Hall, Chuchot Yokma-Ist for the semi-skilled and unskilled sanitation workers by the CII Foundation in collaboration with HFDC Parivartan and RDD Deptt of UT Ladakh.
The workshop was aimed at developing soft skills along with in-depth inculcation of waste types of the attendees for easier segregation at their respective Solid Resource Management Centres (SRMC) at Chuchot and Kharu, respectively. The training was imparted by Dr. Shafia Wani, Sanitation Changemaker and international consultant; and facilitated by the CII Foundation staff.About 16 sanitation workers, two drivers namely Shamaz Din and Chemat Dorjey, Amina Khatoon and Padma Yangdol as supervisors, CII Foundation staff including Jibran Zakir, Thinley Nurboo, Namgail Angmo, Tsering Angdu and Tsetan Dolker from both the centres were present.
The facilitators coordinated the translations in Ladakhi and fun activities for keeping the participants engaged for longer hours,such as alertness testing games as well as physical movement activities.
Topics covered under the two-days training were Decoding scenarios of sanitation workers, importance of wearing PPE kits at the field, various types of wastes, how to convert waste to resource, and interpersonal skills imparted through audio-visual means of documentaries and videos on waste and an hour of practical waste segregation at the Chuchot unit. The key learnings by the attendees were the better handling of waste along with better segregation so as to keep raw materials for an industry seeking for recycling waste ready at both units. The attendees expressed their grievances regarding some issues such as mixed waste given by households, low wages, and other economic opportunities during the summer season.
