Lovlina Borgohain Chases Commonwealth Gold As India Pins Hopes On Boxing Star In Glasgow
India’s boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be spearheaded by Olympic bronze medallist and World Champion Lovlina Borgohain, who will look to complete her impressive medal collection with a maiden Commonwealth Games gold.
Competing in the women’s 75kg category, the Assamese boxer enters the Games as one of India’s strongest medal contenders. An Olympic bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020 and the 2023 World Champion, Lovlina has consistently delivered strong performances on the international stage and remains one of India’s most accomplished boxers.
Her journey from Baromukhia village in Assam’s Golaghat district to the global boxing arena has been marked by determination and perseverance. Initially introduced to combat sports through kickboxing, she was identified during a Sports Authority of India (SAI) talent scouting programme in 2012 by coach Padum Boro, who played a key role in shaping her early career.
Lovlina made history at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the third Indian boxer and the second Indian woman after Mary Kom to win an Olympic boxing medal. She later adapted successfully to the revised Olympic weight categories by moving from 69kg to 75kg, where she continued her success by winning medals at the World Championships and other major international competitions.
Despite her achievements, the Commonwealth Games remains the only major multi-sport event where she is yet to win gold. Ahead of Glasgow 2026, Lovlina had identified the Commonwealth title as one of her key career goals, saying she had focused on improving her technique, strength and overall preparation for the competition.
Her campaign received an early boost after she secured a direct entry into the semi-finals due to the limited number of participants in the women’s 75kg event. Under the Commonwealth Games competition format, both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals, guaranteeing India its first boxing medal of the Games before the event officially gets underway.
However, the 27-year-old will be aiming for more than a podium finish. Victory in the semi-final would assure her at least a silver medal and move her within one bout of the coveted Commonwealth Games gold. Winning the title would add another significant achievement to a career that already includes Olympic and World Championship honours.
Beyond her achievements inside the ring, Lovlina has emerged as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, particularly young women from rural India. Her success underscores the importance of grassroots talent identification, quality coaching and sustained support in nurturing sporting excellence.
India has traditionally enjoyed strong performances in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, and expectations remain high despite the streamlined competition format in Glasgow. Lovlina’s technical ability, tactical discipline and composure under pressure make her one of the favourites in the women’s 75kg competition.
As the Games unfold in Glasgow, the Indian boxer will look to convert years of international experience into Commonwealth glory and add the only major title missing from her distinguished career.
