Former India Midfielder Mohan Singh Dies; AIFF Condoles Demise

Former Indian football stalwart Mohan Singh died on Thursday, May 7, at the age of 78. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) mourned his death and paid tribute to his contribution to Indian football.
A skilful midfielder of his era, Mohan Singh represented India in the early 1970s and made his senior national team debut against Burma in Rangoon during the 1972 Pre-Olympic Tournament. He earned three international caps, all during the same campaign.
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey described him as a gifted footballer who served Indian football with distinction.
“His performances for both the national team and some of the country’s most iconic clubs reflected his passion and commitment to the sport,” Chaubey said while extending condolences to Singh’s family and loved ones.
At the domestic level, Mohan Singh represented Bengal in the 1972 Santosh Trophy and played a key role in the side’s title-winning campaign, scoring twice.
At the club level, he had successful stints with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
During his two spells with East Bengal in 1972 and 1975, Mohan Singh scored 11 goals across competitions and won multiple trophies, including the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup and Bordoloi Trophy.
He later turned out for Mohun Bagan in 1973 and 1974, winning the Durand Cup in 1974, before also representing Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1976.
The AIFF said Indian football had lost one of its distinguished former players and honoured his legacy in both the domestic and international game.
