New Postal Law ‘Post Office Act 2023’ Comes Into Effect, Enhancing Ease Of Living
The central government has issued a notification giving effect to the provisions of the new postal law, the Post Office Act, 2023, from June 18. According to a Ministry of Communications release, “The Post Office Act, 2023,” vide notification dated June 17, 2024, comes into force with effect from June 18, 2024, and repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.” “The Post Office Bill, 2023” was introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, and passed in Rajya Sabha on December 4, 2023. The bill was then considered and passed by the Lok Sabha on December 12 and 18, 2023. The Act received the assent of the President of India on December 24, 2023, and was published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 1, dated December 24, 2023, by the Ministry of Law & Justice (Legislative Department) for general information. The Act aims to create a simple legislative framework, for the delivery of citizen-centric services and the benefits of government schemes up to the last mile, enhancing ease of living. The exclusive privilege of collecting, processing, and delivering of letters granted to the Post Office previously, has been discontinued. In order to promote “maximum governance and minimum government,” no penal provisions have been prescribed in the Post Office Act, 2023, which comes into force today. The newly enacted postal law provides a framework for prescribing standards for the addressing of items, address identifiers, and usage of postcodes. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday expressed grief over the deaths of people in the fire incident in Kuwait and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the victims, who were from the state. Two residents of Bihar were among the 45 Indians who died in the fire incident on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sent shockwaves through communities both in Kuwait and India. “It is sad that two people from Bihar died in a fire incident in a multi-story building in Kuwait. The Resident Commissioner in New Delhi has been directed to establish contact with the Kuwait Embassy and take action to send the bodies to their native places. The closest relatives of both the deceased have been asked to be given Rs 2 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. I pray to God to give strength to the bereaved family to bear the pain in this hour of grief,” CM Kumar posted on X. Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force’s C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, carrying the mortal remains of the deceased in the Kuwait fire tragedy, arrived at Palam Technical Airport on Friday. BJP MPs Yogendra Chandolia, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Bansuri Swaraj, and other leaders were present at the airport to receive the mortal remains. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasized that it usually takes 10-15 days, but at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s and EAM Jaishankar’s request, they were able to bring the mortal remains of those Indian nationals who lost their lives in the deadly fire incident.

The Indian stock market surged to new record highs on Thursday, boosted by easing retail inflation in both India and the US, and expectations that the US Federal Reserve might cut interest rates soon. The Sensex gained 379.66 points, or 0.50%, to trade at 76,986.23, while the Nifty rose 118.00 points, or 0.51%, to 23,441.00. Market sentiment was positive, with 2,123 shares advancing, 346 shares declining, and 107 shares remaining unchanged. India’s annual retail inflation eased to a 12-month low of 4.75% in May from 4.83% in April, government data showed on Wednesday. “There is good news on the inflation front, both in the US and in India,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. “The takeaway from the inflation numbers is that the disinflation process is well on track. From the market perspective, this is positive news, particularly for banking stocks.” Strong buying by both foreign and domestic institutional buyers also supported the stock markets. Leading the gains on the Nifty were Nestle, Divis Labs, HDFC Life, Shriram Finance, and LTIMindtree. On the downside, HUL, Britannia, Tata Consumer, and ICICI Bank were among the major losers. By 10:28 AM, the Sensex had moderated its gain to 218 points, and the Nifty was up by 63 points.
