New Postal Law ‘Post Office Act 2023’ Comes Into Effect, Enhancing Ease Of Living
The central government has issued a notification giving effect to the provisions of the new postal law, the Post Office Act, 2023, from June 18. According to a Ministry of Communications release, “The Post Office Act, 2023,” vide notification dated June 17, 2024, comes into force with effect from June 18, 2024, and repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.” “The Post Office Bill, 2023” was introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, and passed in Rajya Sabha on December 4, 2023. The bill was then considered and passed by the Lok Sabha on December 12 and 18, 2023. The Act received the assent of the President of India on December 24, 2023, and was published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 1, dated December 24, 2023, by the Ministry of Law & Justice (Legislative Department) for general information. The Act aims to create a simple legislative framework, for the delivery of citizen-centric services and the benefits of government schemes up to the last mile, enhancing ease of living. The exclusive privilege of collecting, processing, and delivering of letters granted to the Post Office previously, has been discontinued. In order to promote “maximum governance and minimum government,” no penal provisions have been prescribed in the Post Office Act, 2023, which comes into force today. The newly enacted postal law provides a framework for prescribing standards for the addressing of items, address identifiers, and usage of postcodes. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina held discussions with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on the present situation in Bangladesh and her future course of action at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Monday, according to sources. The Indian Air Force has put its personnel on alert in every eastern sector in view of the present developments. Moreover, the Indian Air Force and other security agencies are providing security to her, and she is being moved to a safe location, according to the sources. PM Sheikh Hasina landed at the Hindon Air Base near New Delhi in a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft on Monday evening. Security has heightened outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi after PM Sheikh Hasina reached India following her departure from Dhaka amid ongoing protests. Additionally, a senior BSF officer said they are constantly in touch with Border Guard Bangladesh over the current situation. “As of now, the situation is normal at the border. Due to the curfew in Bangladesh, there are restrictions on traffic movement at Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) along the India-Bangladesh border,” a senior BSF officer said. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also briefed PM Modi on Monday evening about the current political situation in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina reached India. Meanwhile, former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia appealed to all people of the country to remain calm. Zia, who is also the BNP Chairperson, urged people of all levels to stay calm in the ongoing situation. The acting chairman of the party, Tarique Rahman, also called upon people of all levels to remain calm. The anti-discrimination student movement will announce the outline of the national government at 8 pm (local time). Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement said in a live program on Channel 24 that the outline of the national government will be announced at the Sark fountain in Karwan Bazar, as reported by Bangladesh newspaper Prothom Alo. Nahid Islam, the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, called upon the students to ensure that no one takes the opportunity to loot in the current situation in Bangladesh. He further appealed to the students who were standing on the streets to stop the looters. Additionally, Nahid Islam called upon the students to sit on the streets peacefully until the desired goal is achieved. Protesters in Bangladesh stormed the Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday, shortly after Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation and left the country accompanied by her sister. Meanwhile, Bangladesh newspaper Prothom Alo reported that the Awami League’s Dhaka district office was set on fire by the agitators. The agitators started the fire at around 4 pm on Monday. Agitators also set fire to the Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s office at 3/A Dhanmondi in Dhaka. Protesters were seen chanting slogans and celebrating the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
