Delhi: In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has issued an official order concerning the appointment of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Nalin Prabhat to the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) Police. As per the order, dated 15th August 2024, Nalin Prabhat, an IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre (1992 batch), has been transferred to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre. He will take up the role of Special Director General (SDG) of J&K Police with immediate effect, a position he will hold until 30th September 2024.

This move comes ahead of a key leadership change in the J&K Police. The current Director General of Police (DGP), RR Swain (AGMUT:1991), is slated to retire on 30th September 2024. Upon Swain’s retirement, Nalin Prabhat is set to succeed him as the DGP of Jammu & Kashmir, effective from 1st October 2024, until further orders.

Nalin Prabhat brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various capacities throughout his career in the Andhra Pradesh cadre. His appointment as the Special Director General marks a critical phase in J&K’s law enforcement as the region continues to deal with its complex security challenges.

This order, issued with the approval of the competent authority, underscores the strategic importance of maintaining robust leadership within the J&K Police, particularly in the context of ongoing counter-insurgency operations and the need for sustained stability in the region.

The appointment of Nalin Prabhat is part of the MHA’s broader strategy to ensure that Jammu & Kashmir has a strong and experienced leadership at the helm of its police force, capable of navigating the evolving security landscape.

The transition in leadership is crucial as it ensures continuity in the command structure of the J&K Police, particularly at a time when the region is witnessing critical developments. Nalin Prabhat’s expertise will be instrumental in maintaining law and order and furthering the efforts to counter militancy in the region.

Distribution and Communication:

The order has been widely communicated, with copies sent to key officials across various Union Territories and the Chief Secretaries of states under the AGMUT cadre, including Delhi, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and others, ensuring that all relevant authorities are informed about this significant leadership change.

The appointment of Nalin Prabhat as the Special Director General and his subsequent elevation to the position of DGP of Jammu & Kashmir highlights the central government’s commitment to bolstering the leadership within J&K Police. His role will be pivotal in shaping the security strategy for the region in the coming months.
