Bishnah : Tensions escalated along the ring road area of Bishnah as local villagers, joined by BJP MLA Dr Rajeev Bhagat, staged a protest against an ongoing demolition drive carried out by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA).
The protest erupted after JDA officials, accompanied by police personnel, arrived at the site with heavy machinery to demolish what they termed as “illegal constructions” along the ring road. Eyewitnesses reported that several structures were targeted during the operation, triggering anger among residents.
Villagers alleged that this was not the first such drive in the area, pointing out that similar demolition actions had been carried out earlier in adjoining localities. Protesters accused JDA officials of negligence and corruption, questioning why authorities remained inactive during the construction phase and intervened only after buildings were completed.
Leading the protest, MLA Dr Rajeev Bhagat strongly criticized the JDA’s actions, standing in solidarity with the affected families. He argued that many of the residents possess legitimate ownership documents for their land and accused the authority of unfairly targeting “innocent villagers.”
“The administration should first act against influential individuals involved in large-scale illegal colonies and encroachments on state land,” Bhagat said during the protest.
“Why are small landowners being singled out while bigger violations go unchecked?”
The situation remained tense for several hours as protesters demanded an immediate halt to the demolition drive and sought a fair review of the cases. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the allegations raised by the MLA and local residents.
