Srinagar : In a momentous occasion marked by historical significance and communal harmony, the revered temple of Goddess Uma Bhagwati was reopened in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir after more than three decades. The ceremony, held on Sunday, saw the presence of Union Minister Nityanand Rai, symbolizing the temple’s restoration as a cultural and spiritual landmark.

The temple, located in Umanagri, Anantnag, has a profound heritage intertwined with local lore. It is believed that the shrine originated as a spring with five channels resembling an Omkar, discovered by the revered saint Swami Shivanand. This spring has been a focal point of spiritual significance for devotees of the goddess Uma Devi.

The reopening ceremony commenced with the placement of a newly sculpted idol of Goddess Uma, transported from Rajasthan, into the sanctum sanctorum. The ritual was accompanied by the melodious chanting of hymns, filling the air with a sense of divine reverence. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of both Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims, showcasing the region’s intrinsic communal harmony.

Local resident Gulzar Ahmad expressed his joy over the restoration, highlighting the community’s support for their Pandit brethren. “We are here to help our Pandit brethren in whatever way possible,” Ahmad remarked, reflecting the collaborative spirit that marked the day’s proceedings. He added, “I am happy that a religious function was held at the temple after 34 years.”

The temple’s reopening is seen as a beacon of hope and a step towards the cultural resurgence in the Kashmir Valley, which has a rich tapestry of religious and cultural heritage.
