Sikh community, incensed by the denial of a Sikh student’s right to appear in the NEET exam with religious symbols, faces a distressing predicament.

In a distressing turn of events, a Sikh student was denied entry to a NEET exam center at Nagbani School in Jammu today, all because of his religious attire—a ‘karha’ (steel bracelet) and ‘Kirpan’ (ceremonial dagger), which are integral symbols for Amritdhari Sikhs. This incident has reignited concerns over religious discrimination and respect for diversity.

The unnamed Sikh student, whose identity remains undisclosed, arrived at the exam venue prepared to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). However, he was halted at the entrance by security personnel who cited his religious symbols as grounds for refusal.

Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Similar discriminatory incidents against Sikh individuals have occurred in the past, highlighting an urgent need for awareness and respect for religious freedoms. To address this ongoing issue, the then Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Mukesh Singh issued a circular on November 7, 2024, directing all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to ensure that Sikhs are permitted to retain their religious symbols during examinations within the Union Territory.

However, despite this official directive, today’s events unfolded contrary to the ADGP’s order, suggesting a significant lapse in implementation and awareness among security personnel.

Highlighting the legal precedence in favor of religious freedom, the story references a recent order from the Delhi High Court affirming the rights of Sikhs to wear their religious symbols during exams, underscoring the need for uniform adherence to such principles nationwide.
