Centre Likely to Appoint Former IB Chief Tapan Kumar Deka as Governor/LG; Cabinet Reshuffle from UP Under Consideration Ahead of Assembly Polls

JAMMU : Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka is likely to be considered by the Central Government for appointment as a Governor or Lieutenant Governor, according to sources.

A 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Deka recently completed his tenure as Director of the Intelligence Bureau after serving in the country’s top internal intelligence agency since June 2022. He was among the longest-serving chiefs of the agency in recent years.

Sources said Deka’s extensive experience in handling critical national security challenges and internal security matters has made him a strong contender for a constitutional assignment as Governor or Lieutenant Governor.

Meanwhile, sources also indicated that a reshuffle in the Union Council of Ministers cannot be ruled out, particularly with regard to ministers representing Uttar Pradesh, as the politically significant Assembly elections in the state are scheduled to be held early next year.

According to the sources, the Centre is considering replacing one or two ministers from the Uttar Pradesh quota to strengthen the party’s organisational and electoral preparations in the state ahead of the Assembly polls.

The proposed changes, if carried out, are aimed at enabling senior leaders to devote greater time and energy to Uttar Pradesh, which is expected to play a crucial role in the political landscape leading up to the 2029 General Elections.
