Jammu: On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the Government has announced a series of honours for officers of the paramilitary and police forces across the country, recognising their exceptional courage, professionalism, and dedication to duty.
This year’s list of awardees includes:
• Gallantry Medals (GM): 226 officers
• President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM): 89 officers
• Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM): 635 officers
Among the Gallantry Medal recipients is Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Sunil Jasrotia, currently serving as SDPO Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, who is widely respected for his professional policing and operational expertise.
Heroic Act in Sidhra (Nagrota) Encounter:
DySP Jasrotia has been honoured for his brave and decisive action during the Sidhra (Nagrota) encounter in December 2021. In that high-risk operation, four dreaded foreign terrorists of Jaish e Mohammad were eliminated in a joint operation carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) Jammu and the Army’s Special Forces.
The encounter, which unfolded in a tense, urban-fringe setting, required swift tactical manoeuvring and flawless coordination between forces. DySP Jasrotia played a crucial role in planning and leading the engagement, ensuring the neutralisation of the terrorists while preventing civilian casualties.
A Career Marked by Gallantry:
This is not the first time DySP Jasrotia’s bravery has been recognised at the national level. In 2007, he was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry for his role in an operation at Saffian, Kathua in which dreaded Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist Abu Talha was eliminated, cementing his reputation as an officer with nerves of steel in the face of danger.
Over the years, he has been involved in multiple anti-terror operations, earning respect within the force and the community for his dedication, operational acumen, and leadership under pressure.
Recognition of Service and Sacrifice:
The Gallantry Medal is one of the highest honours for bravery awarded to police and paramilitary personnel, recognising acts of exceptional courage in the line of duty. The inclusion of DySP Jasrotia in this year’s list reflects the Government’s acknowledgment of the extraordinary risks officers face while safeguarding national security.
As the nation celebrates its 79th Independence Day, stories like that of DySP Jasrotia serve as a reminder of the unwavering commitment and silent sacrifices of those who stand on the frontlines against terrorism.
