Jammu : To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day observed annually on June 15, a significant event took place in Jammu today where HelpAge India unveiled its latest report titled “United by Family, Divided by Age.” The report was officially released by Sh. Shiv Kumar Sharma (IPS), DIG JSK Range, in the presence of senior journalists, volunteers, social activists, and elderly citizens from across the region.
The event was attended by Deepak Khajuria, Senior Journalist and Executive Editor of The Newsroom 24 Awaz Jammu, along with the HelpAge India Jammu team led by Mrs. Neeru Sharma Khajuria (Manager HelpAge India) and Tanmay Sharma (Volunteer HelpAge India). Also present was Sh. Darshan Shastri, a well-known astrologer and social activist, along with numerous senior citizens, who added value to the discussion through their lived experiences.
In his address, DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma emphasized the urgent need for society to confront and address the often-overlooked issue of elder abuse, which is increasingly becoming a hidden crisis in Indian households. “Reports like these are not just statistics; they are a mirror to society. Elderly abuse, whether emotional, physical, or financial, must be acknowledged and addressed with urgency,” he said. He also lauded the dedicated efforts of HelpAge India’s Jammu team for their selfless service toward the welfare of the elderly in the Union Territory.
He further stated that the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JSK Range) is willing to collaborate closely with HelpAge India to create safer and more inclusive environments for the elderly. “We are open to joint initiatives, awareness campaigns, and strengthening support networks to ensure the safety and dignity of our senior citizens,” the DIG added.
HelpAge India, a non-profit working for the rights and welfare of elderly persons, also operates a national toll-free helpline (1800-180-1253) for older adults. This helpline is currently functional in 15 states, offering emotional, medical, legal, and emergency support.
The newly released report reveals disturbing trends in elder abuse, showing that while families remain the closest support system, they are also often the source of neglect and emotional harm. The theme “United by Family, Divided by Age” starkly captures this duality.
The event concluded with a renewed call for intergenerational respect, stronger family values, and the need for community and institutional support to uphold the dignity of elders in society.
