SRINAGAR : As missiles lit up Tehran’s sky on Friday night and shockwaves rippled through the streets, a wave of dread surged through the heart of Jammu and Kashmir. Over 1,300 Kashmiri students including more than 600 women remain stranded in Iranian cities like Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, trapped in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict that now threatens to spiral into full-scale war.
With civilian airports shut, including Tehran International, and multiple Gulf airlines suspending operations, a growing chorus of political leaders, student groups, and anguished families are demanding immediate evacuation of these young Indians caught in the crossfire.
This is no longer a diplomatic standoff. It’s a real threat to civilian life. We’re terrified,” said a Kashmiri student from Qom over a crackling phone call, her voice trembling. She requested anonymity, fearing repercussions.
Panic Spreads from Hostels to Homes:
The Friday night airstrikes, reportedly launched by Israel, hit multiple sites in and around Tehran. Explosions and tremors were felt near student hostels and university campuses, especially in central and southern Tehran, sending Kashmiri students fleeing to underground shelters and triggering desperate calls to families back home.
Over 200 Kashmiri students studying in 15 universities across Tehran are living in fear after the reported Israeli strikes and ongoing tension. Parents urge the Indian government to take immediate steps for their safe return,” tweeted Ishfaq Sayed, a student stuck in Tehran.
Political, Religious, and Civil Voices Unite:
The alarm in Kashmir is now nationwide. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah issued a blunt, urgent appeal to the Union Government:
Requesting @MEAIndia to urgently ensure the safety and well-being of Kashmiri students currently stuck in Iran. Their families are deeply worried, and we stand with them in this difficult time. Every step must be taken to safeguard our students,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Backing him, senior Shia cleric and politician Imran Reza Ansari echoed the call:
Getting numerous distress calls from Kashmiri students in Iran amid the escalating conflict. I urge @DrSJaishankar to kindly announce an urgent evacuation plan. These young citizens are our top priority & their families back home are in deep despair.”
Even student associations are stepping in. The J&K Students Association has formally written to the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, pleading for swift action.
J&K Students Association writes to EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar, seeks urgent evacuation of Kashmiri students amid Iran-Israel escalation,” the group stated on X.
Evacuation Blueprint Taking Shape:
With air routes compromised, urgent suggestions are being floated for alternative escape strategies:
Sea evacuation via the Persian Gulf in coordination with Iran’s port authorities;
Land transit through Iraq, Turkey, or Oman via diplomatic corridors;
Special evacuation flights, similar to those conducted during past crises in Ukraine, Yemen, and Libya.
Yet, despite the mounting pressure, the Ministry of External Affairs has issued no official advisory, no helpline, and no sign of evacuation readiness as of this report.
Hope Hinges on Delhi’s Response:
Families across Kashmir are living through sleepless nights, watching war unfold on television while their children live it firsthand in a volatile West Asian theatre.
India has always stood up for its people in times of crisis. We must do so now too,” urged parents and student groups in joint appeals, citing India’s historic evacuations under Operation Ganga (Ukraine) and Operation Raahat (Yemen).
But with missiles now outpacing diplomacy, time is running out. Each passing hour without a concrete rescue plan brings dread closer to reality for the students and heartbreak closer to home for their families.
As one Kashmiri father put it grimly from Srinagar:
My daughter went to Tehran to study, not to survive a war. Bring them home before it’s too late.”
Now, the nation watches, waits and hopes Government of India answers their call.
