JAMMU: In a surprise operation conducted today, the South Zone police under the leadership of SP South set up a naka (checkpoint) outside Presentation Convent School in Gandhi Nagar. This operation was part of a broader strategy to curb traffic violations, unsafe vehicle modifications, and the growing trend of promoting gun culture through vehicle displays.
Key Outcomes of the Operation:
1. Seizure of Modified Vehicles:
A total of 10 vehicles were seized on the spot for violating permissible standards under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The primary violations included the use of tinted glass, illegal modifications, and offensive messages or graphics promoting gun culture.
2. Immediate Penalties:
The operation also resulted in 32 on-the-spot challans issued for minor offences under the Motor Vehicle Act (MVD), lack of proper documentation, and violations related to vehicle fitness.
Context and Implications:
The operation comes at a time when law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to address public safety concerns. The trend of vehicles displaying messages glorifying gun culture has been a growing issue, particularly in urban areas. Such displays, often seen as promoting aggression and lawlessness, have been flagged by authorities as detrimental to societal harmony and public safety.
Focus on School Zones:
The choice of location—outside a prominent school—underscores the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of children and maintaining discipline in areas frequented by families. Schools are high-sensitivity zones, and any form of lawlessness near such locations is treated with zero tolerance.
Public Reaction:
The operation received mixed reactions from the public. While many lauded the police for taking decisive action against violators, some raised concerns about the inconvenience caused to commuters during the naka. However, officials defended the operation, emphasizing that such steps are necessary to instill discipline and ensure road safety.
Message from SP South:
In a statement, SP South Ajay Sharma reiterated the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order and curbing the glorification of violence through public displays. “We will continue to take strict action against those who violate the law or promote harmful societal trends. Our priority is the safety and security of all citizens, especially in sensitive zones like schools,” the officer stated.
The operation is expected to act as a deterrent for vehicle owners engaging in illegal modifications and promoting gun culture. It also highlights the importance of adhering to traffic laws and fostering a culture of responsibility on the roads.
The police have hinted at conducting similar surprise checks in the future to ensure compliance and create a safer environment across the region.
