Srinagar : In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage, attendants of patients admitted for knee surgery at a private hospital in Srinagar have alleged that their loved ones were left unattended in the operation theatre after being administered anaesthesia. The controversy has thrown light on questionable practices in private healthcare facilities and has raised concerns about patient safety.
According to details shared with Black and White Digital News, approximately 10 patients scheduled for knee surgery on Friday were sedated despite the absence of the primary surgeon, whose flight to Srinagar was delayed. The delay resulted in a chaotic situation, with patients left unconscious for hours, while their worried families demanded answers.
Attendants Voice Outrage:
“We brought our relatives here, trusting the hospital’s promises of specialized care. But instead, they were sedated and left unattended because the doctor was late. This is inhumane and unacceptable,” said one attendant.
Another family member, visibly distraught, added, “We don’t even know who eventually performed the surgeries. We paid for a specific doctor, and he wasn’t even present. The hospital owes us clarity and accountability.”
Hospital’s Defense:
Responding to the allegations, a senior doctor at the hospital admitted that the delay was caused by the flight issue of the lead surgeon. “It was an unfortunate and unforeseen situation. Once anaesthesia was administered, delaying the procedures further was not a viable option. Fortunately, we have other experienced doctors who are fully capable of performing such surgeries,” he explained.
The doctor also assured that patient safety was a top priority and that the hospital staff made every effort to ensure the surgeries were conducted with care. “We deeply regret the distress caused to the patients and their families,” he added.
Call for Accountability:
The incident has triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning the hospital’s decision to proceed with anaesthesia despite the unavailability of the designated surgeon. Patient rights groups and health experts have called for stricter protocols and transparency in such situations.
“This incident reflects a glaring lack of communication and planning. The hospital’s management must answer for the lapses and ensure that such negligence is not repeated,” said a prominent healthcare activist.
As the families of the affected patients demand accountability, the incident has put the spotlight on private hospitals in Srinagar, raising pressing questions about their operational standards and ethical practices.
