In a troubling turn of events, a scurrilous social media campaign has taken aim at esteemed senior women functionaries in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting a swift and determined response from the local authorities. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have been inundated with complaints and supporting evidence revealing a distressing pattern of baseless and derogatory communications circulating on various internet-based platforms.
These malicious communications, primarily disseminated via platforms like WhatsApp, have been rife with scandalous and unfounded allegations aimed at besmirching the reputations and integrity of prominent public figures and governmental institutions. Allegedly attributed to a certain “Manish Sharma” of the Pir Panjal Times, the origins of these defamatory messages have incited outrage among the targeted individuals and ignited broader concerns about the unchecked spread of harmful content in the digital domain.
Responding swiftly to mounting grievances, the Crime Branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has launched a thorough investigation, registering a case under FIR No. 04/2024. The case invokes multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 500 (defamation), and 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), alongside pertinent provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, particularly section 66C (identity theft).
“The severity of these allegations cannot be understated, as they not only malign the dignity of the individuals named but also erode public trust in our esteemed institutions,” emphasized a senior official spearheading the investigation.
The circulated communications specifically targeted women officials of the government, leveling derogatory and false allegations that have reverberated across social media platforms. Misleading letters addressed to Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo purportedly authored by “Manish Sharma” have intensified concerns, with accusations directed towards former Chief Secretary and Commissioner Secretary.
This disturbing development underscores the urgent need for robust measures to combat the proliferation of misinformation and defamatory content online. The Jammu and Kashmir Police remain resolute in their pursuit of justice, vowing to apprehend those responsible for orchestrating this damaging campaign and to uphold the dignity and honor of those unjustly targeted.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging the public to exercise vigilance and restraint in the consumption and dissemination of unverified information. As the case unfolds, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the imperative to safeguard the integrity of public discourse and protect the rights of all individuals, especially women leaders, against malicious attacks in the digital age.
