In a stark warning underscoring the volatile security situation, Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police, Rashmi Ranjan Swain, revealed that approximately 70 terrorists are currently positioned on launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC), poised to infiltrate into Indian territory. Despite a significant degradation of their capabilities, these groups, backed by Pakistan, continue to pose a serious threat to regional stability.
During an exclusive interview with PTI, DGP Swain, who also oversees the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Jammu and Kashmir, provided a comprehensive assessment of the security landscape. He emphasized that the “enemy’s intent is very much there,” even though their capability has been weakened. The determination to send men and materials across the border remains undeterred.
Swain highlighted that the adversary’s attempts to destabilize the area have not ceased. “In our meetings with our security partners, we generally have come to the conclusion that it is a fact that the adversary or the enemy has not stopped from sending men and material,” he stated. The presence of foreign terrorists from neighboring Pakistan further complicates the situation.
The DGP outlined the persistent threat posed by these terrorist groups. “At any given point of time, perhaps you would have about 60-70 persons in groups of five or six at different places waiting to be pushed into our side,” Swain explained. He assured that the combined efforts of the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police are focused on thwarting these infiltration attempts.
Swain also brought attention to the evolving challenge of drone droppings, which facilitate the smuggling of arms, ammunition, explosives, cash, and narcotics into the region. While acknowledging some successes in countering these activities, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance and concerted efforts to fully neutralize this threat.
“We have made progress… For example, in narcotics, you know one can reverse the cycle but it would take quite a bit of effort for some more time to be able to conclusively say that we have been able to plug it for good,” Swain remarked.
The DGP stressed the importance of a unified approach in addressing these security challenges. He underscored that the police, Army, and other security forces are resolutely committed to making it increasingly difficult for adversaries to succeed in their nefarious activities. “We are absolutely determined that we will make it absolutely hard for the adversary to succeed,” he asserted.
Swain’s comments come at a time when tensions along the LoC remain high, and the threat of infiltration continues to loom large. His insights provide a sobering reminder of the persistent challenges faced by security forces in safeguarding the region and maintaining stability.
While significant strides have been made in countering these threats, the battle is far from over. Sustained vigilance and collaborative efforts remain crucial in ensuring the security and stability of Jammu and Kashmir.
