Baramulla, May 10:
In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, Kashmir police have uncovered a major drug trafficking operation in the Uri area of Baramulla district, seizing drugs valued at Rs 50 crore along with a staggering cash haul of Rs 12.63 crore. This operation has resulted in the apprehension of three suspects directly involved in the illicit trade.
The bust unfolded following a meticulously planned operation by law enforcement, targeting key locations in Churanda and Dhanisyedan villages. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amod Ashok Nagpure revealed that the seized narcotics, weighing approximately 7.8 kg, were concealed within these communities.
The investigation was spurred by specific intelligence pointing to the involvement of Mehmood Ahmad Najar from Churanda and Sajad Ahmad Malik from Dhanisyedan in drug trafficking. Subsequently, the duo’s interrogation led authorities to identify Fayaz Ahmad Hajam, another key player in the illicit network.
During a media briefing, SSP Nagpure highlighted the sequence of events that led to the successful operation. Acting swiftly on gathered intelligence, police officials detained Najar and Malik, recovering a substantial cache of narcotics and cash from their possession. This breakthrough then enabled law enforcement to swiftly move on to apprehend Hajam at his residence.
“This seizure marks a crucial milestone in our efforts against drug smuggling, particularly in the border areas like Uri,” emphasized SSP Nagpure. He underlined the significance of preventing narcotics influx into mainland Kashmir and commended the vigilance of the Baramulla police.
The investigation has also pointed towards external links, with the SSP indicating that the smuggling ring had connections to Pakistan-based handlers. He raised concerns about the nefarious designs of such activities, targeting the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, but reassured the public of the police force’s resolve, backed by the military, to counter such threats.
Addressing concerns about potential electoral interference, SSP Nagpure affirmed that a thorough investigation would be conducted to explore any ties between the seized contraband and attempts to influence voters during elections.
The successful bust represents a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region and underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security in Jammu and Kashmir. The seized narcotics and cash have been crucially intercepted before they could wreak havoc in the community, safeguarding the youth and residents from the perils of drug abuse and organized crime.
