In a forceful address, Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav, recently appointed as the party’s election in-charge for Jammu & Kashmir, launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), urging voters to reject parties that “fostered militancy in Kashmir.” He made the remarks while accompanying BJP candidate Engineer Aijaz Hussain, who filed his nomination for the Lal Chowk constituency in Srinagar on Wednesday (September 4, 2024).
Madhav emphasized the need to prevent political power from falling into the hands of those who, according to him, were responsible for militancy in the region. He alluded to attempts to reinstate Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu & Kashmir, as efforts by NC and PDP to “suppress and rule over” the people. “Those who brought peace should be elected,” he asserted, making a clear reference to the BJP’s role in stabilizing the region after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
He warned that former separatists, now campaigning for the PDP and NC, posed a threat to the peace that had been restored. “It’s up to the people whether they want to revive terrorism in J&K or continue with the peace,” he remarked, hinting at the presence of former militants in mainstream politics. Madhav also expressed confidence that a new leadership, committed to peace and development, would emerge in the Kashmir Valley.
The BJP’s decision to field a candidate from Lal Chowk, Srinagar’s commercial hub, is viewed as a bold move, symbolizing the party’s renewed focus on Kashmir in these elections. During the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had refrained from fielding any candidates from the valley. However, Madhav now described the Lal Chowk candidacy as the start of the BJP’s “winning streak,” calling on voters to ensure victory.
Looking ahead, Madhav outlined the BJP’s ambition to form a government in J&K for the first time in the region’s history. The party, he said, aims to secure 45 seats out of 90 in the upcoming elections, with 35 seats in Jammu and 10 in Kashmir . This, he noted, would send a strong message to those who had “ruined J&K for years” through corruption and mismanagement.
In his speech, Madhav promised that a BJP-led government would bring peace, harmony, and development to Jammu & Kashmir, steering the region away from its troubled past and towards a more prosperous future.
