Jammu: As the political battleground heats up in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress Party is strategically positioning itself for the upcoming Assembly elections. In a move to strengthen its candidacy, the Congress is courting disgruntled BJP leaders who find themselves sidelined in the race for party mandates.
According to high-level sources within the Congress, the party is acutely aware of the influx of senior politicians into the BJP over the past five years. Many of these new entrants, as well as veteran BJP figures including former legislators and ex-ministers, are not expected to secure party mandates for the upcoming elections. This opens a window of opportunity for the Congress to attract these leaders to its fold.
A senior Congress leader, speaking to Black and White Digital News on condition of anonymity, disclosed the party’s strategy: “Our focus is on those potential leaders who might not get the BJP’s mandate. The distribution of party mandates within the BJP is expected to be a challenging, if not impossible, task. This gives us an edge to bring these leaders into the Congress for the Assembly elections.”
The Congress’s optimism is grounded in the competitive nature of the political landscape in Jammu province. For each Assembly segment in key districts such as Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, and Udhampur, more than half a dozen strong leaders are vying for a mandate. In the five Assembly segments of Jammu city alone—Jammu South, Bahu, Jammu East, Jammu North, and Jammu West—over 40 senior BJP leaders, including former ministers and ex-legislators, are staking their claims.
“It’s a matter of simple arithmetic. Satisfying all these leaders is beyond the realm of possibility for the BJP, so it’s inevitable that some will seek alternatives, and the Congress is ready to welcome them,” the Congress leader added.
Meanwhile, sources within the BJP acknowledge the internal challenges. The party is reportedly reluctant to field elected members of the District Development Councils (DDCs) in the Assembly elections, which adds another layer of complexity. These DDC members, having joined the BJP to secure their political futures, now aspire to contest the elections, further straining the party’s resources and unity.
The past four years have seen a significant influx of senior politicians from various parties into the BJP, all with the ambition of securing a more stable political future. This trend has led to heightened expectations and aspirations within the BJP ranks, creating an environment ripe for internal friction.
As the Assembly elections approach, the political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir are becoming increasingly fluid. The Congress’s strategy to capitalize on the BJP’s internal discontent reflects the high-stakes nature of the elections. With the Congress eyeing potential BJP defectors and the BJP grappling with internal challenges, the forthcoming elections promise to be a closely watched and fiercely contested affair.
In this politically charged atmosphere, the Congress’s maneuvering to lure discontented BJP leaders could significantly alter the electoral landscape. Whether this strategy will pay off at the polls remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the battle for Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly seats is intensifying, and both parties are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for victory.
