In Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), a region marred by decades of mistreatment and economic hardship under Pakistani occupation, tensions are reaching a boiling point as protests erupt everyday, echoing the widespread discontent among its populace. The demonstrations, fueled by grievances over unjust taxation, soaring electricity bills, uncontrolled inflation, and severe shortages of essentials like flour, represent a culmination of years of systemic neglect and exploitation.
The plight of PoK residents has drawn global attention, with *Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent remarks adding fuel to the geopolitical fire. Singh boldly stated that India would never relinquish its claim on PoK, expressing confidence that its people would willingly choose to be part of India, inspired by the development witnessed in Kashmir. In response, Farooq Abdullah, a prominent political figure, retorted, asserting that “Pakistan is not wearing bangles,”*
a pointed reference underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has echoed India’s steadfast commitment to reclaiming PoK, emphasizing that every political party in India is aligned in this objective, given the region’s historical and cultural ties with India.
However, PoK’s challenges extend beyond mere geopolitical posturing. Decades of Pakistani rule have resulted in economic stagnation and deprivation for its people. Natural resources once abundant in the region have been exploited for Pakistan’s gain, leaving PoK residents marginalized and impoverished. Despite Pakistan’s promises of development, the reality is stark—basic freedoms are routinely denied, with dissenters labeled as anti-Pakistan and anti-Islam, further stifling voices of change.
The ongoing protests in PoK serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for international intervention. The demonstrators, supported by organizations like the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) and Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC), are demanding justice and fundamental rights that have long been denied.
The situation in PoK is emblematic of broader human rights challenges plaguing Pakistan. A history of military rule has eroded democratic institutions, stripping citizens of basic rights such as free speech, assembly, and fair trials. Journalists and activists who dare to speak out against the regime face persecution and threats, perpetuating a culture of fear and intimidation.
The United Nations has raised grave concerns over human rights abuses in PoK, urging Pakistan to implement overdue reforms and address institutional discrimination against minority groups. However, progress remains elusive, with enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings continuing unabated.
Amidst this backdrop, the desire among PoK residents to align with India is gaining traction, fueled by aspirations for economic prosperity and the restoration of their rights. The protests unfolding today are a testament to the resilience of a populace yearning for change and accountability.
As tensions escalate and the world watches, the fate of PoK hangs in the balance. The voices of its people echo a universal cry for justice, underscoring the imperative for international solidarity and decisive action. The time has come to heed their call and stand united against the injustices perpetuated in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
