PM Modi Urges Tamil Leaders to Embrace Native Language During Rameswaram Visit.
Rameswaram, April 6, 2025:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a subtle dig at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and other state leaders during a public address in Rameswaram, questioning the sincerity of their vocal pride in the Tamil language while continuing to sign official letters in English.
Speaking at a gathering after inaugurating the New Pamban Railway Bridge, PM Modi said,
“Sometimes, I am surprised when I receive letters from some leaders of Tamil Nadu — none of them are signed in Tamil. If we are truly proud of Tamil, then I would request everyone to at least sign their names in Tamil.”
The remark comes amid the broader national discourse on the three-language policy, where Tamil Nadu has historically maintained a strong stance in preserving Tamil identity and opposing impositions from the Centre.
Modi emphasized that language is a key part of cultural identity and reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to promoting Tamil language and heritage globally.
“We are working continuously to ensure that Tamil language and Tamil heritage reach every corner of the world,” he added.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was felicitated by BJP leaders upon his arrival in Rameswaram, located in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The event was also attended by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, following the formal inauguration of India’s iconic vertical sea-lift structure — the New Pamban Bridge.
The Prime Minister’s comments are expected to further stir political conversations in the state ahead of the upcoming elections, especially regarding linguistic identity and regional pride.
