JAMMU : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday electrified the political landscape in Doda district, a region crucial to the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, by introducing Shagun Parihar, a terror victim, as a BJP candidate. In a powerful statement of defiance against terrorism, PM Modi declared that the BJP’s decision to field Shagun from the Kishtwar constituency symbolized the party’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism from the region.
Addressing a massive crowd in the Chenab Valley, which includes Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, Modi stated, “Shagun is sitting on the dais, whose father and uncle were killed by terrorists. The BJP gave ticket to this daughter, a terror victim. She is not only a candidate but is a living picture of our determination to root out terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir.”
A Family’s Tragedy, A Nation’s Determination:
Shagun Parihar’s father, Ajit Parihar, and her uncle, Anil Parihar, were shot dead by terrorists in November 2018. By fielding her in the elections, the BJP not only honored her family’s sacrifice but also sent a clear message about the party’s resolve to end terrorism. “This election is not just about politics; it is about restoring peace and justice in Jammu and Kashmir,” Modi emphasized.
BJP’s Vision for a Terror-Free, Tourism-Rich Kashmir:
In a visionary speech, Modi outlined the BJP’s ambitions to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a “terror-free haven for tourists” and a prime location for international film shoots. “I am reminded of the old days, especially Bhaderwah, where films were shot until terrorism drove filmmakers away. After years of hard work, we are not only bringing Indian filmmakers back but are opening the doors for international filmmakers as well,” he said. Modi underscored that the new film policy is a critical part of his government’s strategy to reinvigorate the local economy and bring Kashmir back to the silver screen.
Highlighting the economic resurgence in the region, Modi said that “lakhs of holiday-makers have already started flocking to the valley, with new hotels and improved connectivity boosting tourism.” The Prime Minister’s vision for a reimagined Jammu and Kashmir resonated strongly with the crowd, drawing cheers and applause.
BJP’s Candidates and Their Fight for Peace:
The BJP candidates standing for elections from the eight constituencies in Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, including Gajay Singh (Doda), Shakti Raj Parihar (Doda West), and Sunil Sharma (Padder-Nagseni), joined Shagun Parihar on stage, standing as symbols of the BJP’s commitment to peace, development, and justice. These candidates are being projected as champions of not only regional development but also the larger goal of ending violence in the state.
Rebuttal to Opposition and Article 370 Debate:
In a scathing attack on the opposition, PM Modi urged voters to compare the BJP’s manifesto with that of the National Conference (NC) and Congress. He criticized these parties for calling for the restoration of Article 370, a move he claimed would undo all the progress made in the region since its abrogation in 2019. “The NC, Congress, and PDP want to bring back Article 370, which means they will take away your reservations, deprive those who finally gained voting rights after decades, and snatch the rights of daughters and sisters by reviving Article 35A,” he warned.
Modi also painted a bleak picture of the consequences of reinstating Article 370, asserting that “schools will start burning again, stones will return to children’s hands, strikes will cripple businesses, and the youth will be left jobless.” His message was clear: only the BJP could ensure lasting peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Modi’s Historic Visit to Doda:
This election rally marked a historic occasion, as Modi became the first prime minister to visit Doda for election campaigning in over four decades. His presence in this conflict-ridden region not only underlined the strategic importance of the upcoming elections but also served as a reminder of the BJP’s determination to rebuild Jammu and Kashmir.
As elections in the region begin on September 18, Modi’s words and the symbolism of Shagun Parihar’s candidacy are expected to have a profound impact on the political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir. Whether this bold move translates into electoral success remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the BJP is setting the stage for a new era in the Valley.
