PM Modi, Amit Shah Extend Greetings On National Maritime Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday extended greetings to India’s maritime community on the occasion of National Maritime Day, recognising the sector’s critical role in driving economic growth, trade and connectivity.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “On National Maritime Day, we recall India’s maritime heritage and the invaluable contribution of all those associated with this sector. Their dedication strengthens our economy, trade and connectivity. We will continue to harness the immense potential of our maritime sector for a prosperous future.”
Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the maritime workforce on the occasion. In a post on X, HM Shah said, “Greetings to the personnel of India’s maritime sector on National Maritime Day. Your professionalism and courage have played a crucial role in steering the nation’s growth, whether in peacetime or during trying times. The nation salutes your commitment.”
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised that India’s maritime legacy forms the foundation of its economic progress and global connectivity. He commended the hard work of seafarers and industry stakeholders, stating that their efforts are vital in advancing the vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) also marked the 63rd National Maritime Day with a series of events celebrating the maritime community. Activities organised by the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee (NMDCC), Delhi Chapter included a ceremonial march past and sports competitions such as football, volleyball and athletics, showcasing teamwork and discipline among cadets from leading maritime training institutes.
Held under the theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress,” the celebrations highlighted India’s growing maritime strength, ongoing reforms and its ambition to emerge as a leading global maritime nation. Blood donation drives across the National Capital Region further reflected the sector’s commitment to service and nation-building.
The Ministry also acknowledged the resilience of Indian seafarers operating in challenging conditions, particularly in the West Asia region, and reiterated its commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being.
National Maritime Day is observed annually to commemorate the 1919 maiden voyage of the SS Loyalty, the first Indian-owned ship to sail from Mumbai to London, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in shipping and underscoring India’s long-standing maritime legacy.
