NEW DELHI : In a significant stride towards advancing Jammu and Kashmir’s developmental aspirations, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a high-profile meeting with Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi today. The discussion revolved around crucial financial matters aimed at bolstering the Union Territory’s economic stability and sustainable growth.
Taking to social media, Sitharaman’s office shared on microblogging platform X, “Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah), Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, calls on @nsitharaman.” Omar Abdullah also took to Instagram to highlight the significance of the meeting, stating, “Called on Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, @nsitharaman. Our discussion centred around crucial economic matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir. I passionately advocated for much-needed support from the Union Finance Ministry for the region.”
The Chief Minister expressed optimism that collaborative efforts with the Central Government would enhance financial stability and create opportunities for sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Focus on Tourism and Agriculture:
Among the key issues discussed, Omar Abdullah sought the Union Finance Minister’s support in securing multilateral funding for the development of new tourism destinations in Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative aims to decongest the existing popular locations while creating well-planned, world-class infrastructure at new sites.
He also extended gratitude to the Ministry of Finance for approving the Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture & Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP), which entails financing of $100 million over seven years through the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). This initiative is expected to rejuvenate the agriculture sector in Jammu and Kashmir, providing a major boost to its agrarian economy.
Special Financial Provisions Requested:
During the meeting, Omar Abdullah urged the Finance Ministry to treat Jammu and Kashmir at par with North Eastern States for availing incentives under Externally Aided Project (EAP) loans. He emphasized the need for J&K to be eligible for special lending arrangements under EAP loans to facilitate developmental activities.
The Chief Minister also requested funding through the “Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment” scheme, which offers 50-year interest-free loans to states for capital expenditure. Highlighting Jammu and Kashmir’s fiscal challenges, he sought an additional Rs. 6,000 crore from the Centre to bridge the resource gap in the UT’s budget for the financial year 2024-25.
Strategic Engagements in New Delhi:
Omar Abdullah’s meeting with the Finance Minister was the culmination of a series of significant dialogues during his visit to New Delhi. Over the past few days, the Chief Minister held discussions with President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and participated in a Power Ministers’ conference chaired by the Union Minister of Power. These interactions underscored Jammu and Kashmir’s priorities and challenges, particularly in the power sector.
Omar Abdullah also engaged with industry leaders and government officials to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation. Key meetings included:
Arjun Dhawan, Executive Vice Chairman of Hindustan Construction Company Limited, to discuss infrastructure development projects.
Abhijit Basu, Founder and CEO of Smartex Cognitive Pvt Ltd, who shared innovative solutions in technology and smart governance.
Avinash Pawar, DM of Small Scale Industries Corporation Ltd. (NSIC), who provided insights into boosting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in J&K.
Additionally, the Chief Minister met Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, Deputy Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation, to address urban issues and identify areas for collaboration.
