Jammu: National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah has expressed skepticism towards the exit poll predictions for the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections. Abdullah, known for his candid commentary, labeled the exit polls as mere “time pass,” dismissing the excitement generated by media outlets and social media platforms. His comments came in the wake of various projections showing a strong performance for his party and the Congress-NC alliance.
“I’m amazed channels are bothering with exit polls, especially after the fiasco of the recent general elections. I’m ignoring all the noise on channels, social media, WhatsApp, etc., because the only numbers that matter will be revealed on the 8th of October. The rest is just time pass,” Abdullah posted on X, downplaying the significance of exit poll results that are trending favorably for the Congress-NC alliance.
Favorable Predictions for Congress-NC Alliance:
Despite Omar Abdullah’s skepticism, most exit polls have indicated an advantage for the Congress-National Conference alliance, predicting that it could emerge as the single largest political entity in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. This has sparked interest, given the region’s unique political dynamics and the implications of such a result for the future governance of the Union Territory.
The Congress-NC alliance has campaigned on promises to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, ensure land and job protections for local residents, and address other critical issues left unresolved by the previous administration. Their campaign message appears to have resonated with a broad section of the electorate, as reflected in the exit poll estimates.
BJP’s Optimism Despite Exit Poll Projections:
On the other side, J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina has dismissed the exit poll results that place the BJP behind the Congress-NC alliance, maintaining that his party remains optimistic about its prospects. “We are confident that BJP will emerge as the single largest party when the results are out on October 8,” Raina stated, underscoring the BJP’s strategy and extensive groundwork across the Union Territory.
He highlighted the extensive campaigning led by top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which he believes has bolstered the BJP’s support base, particularly in the Jammu region. The party has focused on issues of national security, economic development, and local governance, seeking to counter the Congress-NC narrative.
Congress-NC Alliance Positioned for Success:
J&K Congress president Tair Hameed Karra echoed Omar Abdullah’s cautious optimism, stating that the Congress-NC alliance is in a strong position to form the next government. “This election was primarily to keep the BJP out of the power corridors, restore statehood, and ensure land and job guarantees for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. I am seeing the (Congress-NC) alliance in a comfortable position to form the government,” Karra asserted.
Karra criticized the BJP for what he described as a decade of misgovernance, arguing that the people of Jammu and Kashmir voted for redressal of their grievances and a new political direction. “The BJP needs to explain to the people what they have done in the past 10 years,” Karra added, pointing to unresolved issues such as high unemployment and the abrogation of Article 370 as key areas where the BJP failed to meet public expectations.
Exit Poll Estimates and Expectations:
The exit polls have offered varying predictions, reflecting the complex political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir:
Congress-NC Alliance: Several exit polls have projected the Congress-NC alliance as the frontrunner, predicting it could secure a majority or emerge as the single-largest coalition. These predictions, if realized, would mark a significant shift in the region’s political equation.
BJP: The BJP, which has a solid presence in Jammu, has been projected to come in second in most surveys. However, the extent of the gap between the BJP and the Congress-NC alliance remains a matter of debate.
Other Parties and Independents: Smaller regional parties and independent candidates could play a crucial role in the formation of the next government, especially in the event of a fractured mandate. Their influence is likely to be felt in areas where the larger parties have struggled to establish dominance.
What to Expect on October 8:
As anticipation builds ahead of the official results announcement on October 8, all eyes are on how these projections will translate into actual votes. The outcome of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections holds significant implications not only for the Union Territory but also for the broader political landscape of India.
With the Congress-NC alliance potentially on the brink of forming the next government, and the BJP aiming to maintain its stronghold in Jammu, the final count will determine whether these exit polls were an accurate reflection of public sentiment or another case of misleading forecasts. Until then, political leaders like Omar Abdullah and Ravinder Raina are left to navigate the buzz and speculation that exit polls invariably generate.
