Jammu / Kashmir: In a sharp exchange of political barbs, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched a blistering attack on Devender Singh Rana, the BJP leader and former National Conference (NC) stalwart. Omar Abdullah, deeply disappointed by Rana’s defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accused his former associate of betraying the people of Jammu, the National Conference, and himself over a span of 25 years.
Omar’s Harsh Criticism: Betrayal and Trust Deficit:
During a recent public interaction, Omar Abdullah did not hold back his feelings. He openly criticized Rana, questioning his credibility and loyalty. “A man who cheated Jammu, NC, and me for 25 years—how can you trust him now?” Omar’s words were not just personal but emblematic of the growing distrust and political animosity between the two leaders.
Rana’s defection from the NC to the BJP in 2021 was seen as a significant blow to the NC, particularly in Jammu where he had built a substantial support base. His departure weakened the NC’s foothold in the region and was perceived as a betrayal of the party’s cause. Omar Abdullah’s comments further highlight the deep political rift between the former allies, painting a picture of internal strife and accusations of dishonesty.
Political Rivalry and Health Jibe:
Beyond political rhetoric, Omar Abdullah took a personal swipe at Rana, commenting on his physical appearance after joining the BJP. “After going to BJP, his health has got affected… He looks sick… I will not make any political statement on him; he should take care of his health,” Omar remarked. The comment, though intended to downplay political hostility, sparked further tensions.
Rana’s Defiant Response: Predictions of NC’s Collapse:
Devender Singh Rana was quick to respond with a confident retort. In a bold counter, Rana predicted a significant electoral defeat for the NC and Congress in the upcoming elections. He went as far as to claim that most candidates from both parties would lose their deposits. He issued a direct challenge to Omar Abdullah, advising him to “save his own seat,” while predicting that Omar would be defeated in both constituencies he contests.
Rana also condemned what he called an unethical attack on Sargun Parihar, BJP female candidate from Kishtwar. He accused the NC and PDP leaders of lacking basic ethics and respect for women in politics, further escalating the war of words.
A Battle of Allegiances:
The verbal clash between Omar Abdullah and Devender Singh Rana is symbolic of the larger political realignment in Jammu and Kashmir. While the NC attempts to consolidate its position as the people’s party, Rana’s defection to the BJP represents the BJP’s growing influence in the region, particularly in Jammu. The exchange underscores the increasing polarization between regional parties like the NC and national political players like the BJP.
As the Union Territory approaches crucial elections, this battle of words could mark the beginning of a more intense political rivalry, with each side rallying their respective supporters in a highly charged atmosphere. Both leaders’ statements indicate that the road ahead will be marked by aggressive campaigning, sharp accusations, and an all-out contest for political dominance in the region.
