Kishtwar: A fresh political controversy has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district after local MLA Shagun Parihar raised serious allegations regarding the security of the strategically important Rattle Hydropower Project, seeking an explanation from Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah.
In statements made publicly and on social media, the MLA alleged that sensitive information, including a map related to the Rattle project, may have been shared with agencies across the border. She further claimed that certain individuals working on the project are either former militants or have alleged links with terrorist outfits, and that their engagement took place without proper verification.
Parihar has demanded a thorough investigation by security agencies, asserting that the safety of local residents and the project itself could be at risk. She held the present government responsible for the alleged recruitment of such individuals and questioned the role of contractors involved in the project.
“If the safety of my people is compromised, I will raise my voice. I represent the poor and downtrodden people of my constituency, and no one can silence that voice,” the MLA said, while also accusing the National Conference leadership of attempting to suppress concerns raised from her constituency.
Status of Police and Security Action:
According to official sources, no FIR has been registered so far, and no written complaint has been submitted by the MLA to the police or security agencies till date. Authorities have not publicly confirmed any security breach or compromise linked to the Rattle Hydropower Project.
The MLA has maintained that her allegations are based on local inputs and ground-level information, which she believes warrant immediate attention. However, she has not produced documentary evidence to support the claims of terror links.
Company Silence and Political Allegations:
Parihar also criticized the project company for its silence, alleging political affiliations with the National Conference and the PDP. The company executing the project has not issued any official response or clarification regarding the allegations.
Political Context: The Rattle Hydropower Project holds strategic and economic importance, making any security-related claim particularly sensitive. The allegations have intensified political exchanges, with opposition leaders urging caution and stressing the need for verified evidence before drawing conclusions.
At present, the matter remains at the level of allegations and political statements, with no formal investigation announced and no case registered. Security agencies are yet to comment officially.
Observers note that while concerns related to national security must be addressed with seriousness, established legal procedures require formal complaints and substantiated evidence to initiate action.
The situation continues to be closely watched as it unfolds at the intersection of security concerns and political discourse in Jammu and Kashmir.
