SRINAGAR:In a significant step towards promoting sustainable energy, the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has officially launched the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in the Kashmir Division by installing the first rooftop solar panels.
Er. Fayaz Ahmad Yatoo, a resident of Rambagh, Electric Subdivision Chanapora, became the scheme’s first beneficiary with the installation of a 6 kWp rooftop solar plant at his home. He is set to receive a Central subsidy of Rs. 85,800, which will be directly credited to his account.
The launch event saw the presence of key officials, including KPDCL Managing Director Mussarat Islam, Chief Engineer Distribution Er. Sandeep Seth, SE O&M Circle II Er. Shurjeel Ghani Lala, senior engineering staff, REC officials, and representatives from the empanelled solar vendor, M/S Kashmir Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd.
A KPDCL spokesperson emphasized that with the onboarding of solar vendors on the National Portal, more beneficiaries will be able to participate in this flagship scheme, which aims to be a pioneering initiative in the power sector. Consumers are encouraged to apply for the solar scheme through the National Surya Ghar Portal. Notably, no Technical Feasibility Report (TFR) is required for solar plants up to 10 kWp, provided the panels are installed on rooftops.
The scheme offers substantial subsidies for residential rooftop solar installations, categorizing J&K UT as a special category. Subsidies include 60% of the system cost for installations up to 2 kW and 40% for systems between 2-3 kW. At current benchmark prices, this translates to Rs. 33,000 for 1 kWp, Rs. 66,000 for 2 kWp, and Rs. 85,800 for 3 kWp systems or higher.
To facilitate beneficiaries and promote the scheme, KPDCL has made a hyperlink for PM Surya Ghar Yojana available on their website, www.kpdcl.jkpdd.net. The spokesperson also highlighted that Kashmir DISCOM is actively conducting awareness camps and IEC campaigns to popularize the solar rooftop scheme among the general public.
