JAMMU: Jammu is grappling with a growing crime wave fueled by a combination of organized thefts, narco-terrorism, and illegal settlements. Residents, particularly in areas like Preet Nagar,Channi ,Trikuta Nagar,Sanjay Nagar are living in fear as thieves armed with sharp-edged weapons have been spotted in the streets during late hours. The police, despite their best efforts, are struggling to control the situation due to a severe shortage of sanctioned strength in local police stations.
POLICE SHORTAGE LEAVES CITY EXPOSED TO CRIME:
The increasing crime rate in Jammu is directly linked to the insufficient manpower in police stations. The sanctioned strength of police personnel is not being maintained as per the allocation, making it difficult for officers to manage crime effectively. Key concerns include:
• Absence of Beat Officers: A lack of dedicated ground-level officers reduces police visibility and response time.
• Overburdened SHOs and Staff: In many cases, even personal security officers (PSOs) of SHOs are being deployed for night duties due to staff shortages.
• Inefficient Crime Control: With a limited number of officers, tackling organized crime, including burglaries, robberies, and drug-related offenses, has become a challenge.
The shortage has put an undue burden on the existing force, making it nearly impossible for them to patrol effectively and respond to emergencies in a timely manner.
NARCO-TERRORISM: THE ROOT CAUSE OF ESCALATING CRIME
Jammu’s increasing crime rate is deeply linked to the rise of drug-related activities. Narco-terrorism has become one of the biggest challenges for law enforcement. Recently, Rajouri Police made a major breakthrough by arresting smugglers and seizing 6 kg of heroin, highlighting the growing influence of drug cartels in the region. Additionally, notorious criminals with dangerous weapons were nabbed by Marine Shaib Police, further exposing the interconnection between drug trade and violent crime.
These incidents indicate a well-organized criminal network operating in Jammu, where narcotics trade fuels thefts, burglaries, and even violent offenses. Without a substantial police force to counter these threats, the situation is bound to deteriorate further.
ILLEGAL SETTLEMENTS: BREEDING GROUNDS FOR CRIMINALS
One of the alarming issues contributing to the rising crime in Jammu is the unchecked growth of illegal settlements. Many vacant plots have been occupied by individuals from outside the state who have settled in temporary jhuggis (slums) without proper verification.
Key concerns regarding these settlements include:
• Lack of background verification: Many of the arrested criminals in theft cases have been traced back to these settlements.
• Safe havens for thieves: These areas provide a hideout for criminals after they commit crimes, making it difficult for police to track them down.
• High involvement in theft cases: A significant number of theft incidents in Jammu are being linked to these unauthorized settlers.
Authorities must take immediate steps to conduct verification drives and remove illegal encroachments that have become hotspots for crime.
CCTV FOOTAGE REVEALS THIEVES WITH WEAPONS, RESIDENTS TERRIFIED
Recent CCTV footage from Preet Nagar and surrounding areas has captured disturbing visuals of thieves carrying sharp-edged weapons while breaking into homes during the late hours. The growing brazenness of these criminals, coupled with the lack of an adequate police response, has left residents terrified.
Key concerns raised by residents:
• Increased home break-ins at night.
• Lack of police visibility in many areas.
• Thieves fearlessly carrying weapons, posing a direct threat to citizens.
POLICE HEADQUARTERS MUST ACT SWIFTLY:
The law-and-order situation in Jammu is deteriorating, and unless immediate action is taken, the city may witness an unprecedented crime surge. To counter this growing menace, senior officials at the police headquarters must prioritize the following actions:
1. Urgent Increase in Sanctioned Strength
• Immediate approval and recruitment of additional police personnel for understaffed police stations.
• Deployment of specialized anti-crime units to high-risk areas.
2. Revival of Beat Policing System
• Appointing beat officers in every locality to maintain regular patrols and build a rapport with residents.
3. Strict Night Patrolling and Quick Response Teams
• Increasing the number of night patrol units in crime-prone areas.
• Setting up quick response teams to handle emergency situations more effectively.
4. Verification of Illegal Settlements
• Conducting verification drives to identify outsiders residing in unauthorized settlements.
• Eviction of unverified occupants involved in criminal activities.
5. Strengthening Anti-Drug Operations
• Intensifying crackdowns on drug smuggling networks.
• Strengthening intelligence gathering to track narcotics-related movements.
The rising crime rate in Jammu is a direct result of a short-staffed police force, the growing influence of narco-terrorism, and unchecked illegal settlements. Residents are living in constant fear as thieves armed with weapons strike homes in the dead of night.
Immediate intervention from senior police officials and the government is necessary to restore law and order. Increasing the sanctioned strength of police personnel, reviving beat policing, and taking stringent action against drug smugglers and illegal settlers are critical steps that must be taken without delay.
