Jammu: In a decisive blow against the growing drug menace in Jammu, the Bakshi Nagar police arrested notorious drug peddler Karamjeet Singh alias Chamkor, son of Manjeet Singh, a resident of Indra Nagar, Miran Sahib. Acting on precise intelligence, the police intercepted a suspicious Maruti Ciaz (Delhi registration DL 6CQ 2534, sans HSR number) at a checkpoint in Bakshi Nagar. The accused attempted to flee, abandoning the vehicle, but the vigilant police team apprehended him. A thorough search led to the recovery of 8 grams of heroin (Chitta) from his possession.
A Long Trail of Crime:
Preliminary investigations revealed that Karamjeet Singh had been selling narcotics in the area for years, targeting vulnerable youth for financial gain. His activities have been linked to cases of drug overdose deaths, which have devastated families and created an atmosphere of fear among parents, particularly those with children living in hostels or attending tuition centers in Jammu.
In this regard, a case under FIR No. 160/2024 has been registered at Police Station Bakshi Nagar, and a comprehensive investigation is underway. Police teams are actively tracing both the supply chain and clientele of the accused to dismantle the broader drug network.
A String of Successes in the Anti-Drug Campaign:
This arrest marks the fourth FIR within the last 15 days as part of the Zero Tolerance Policy against drug peddlers initiated by SDPO City West Jammu, Dr. Satish Bhardwaj, JKPS, and SHO Bakshi Nagar, Sajid Mughal, along with SHO Janipur, Pawan Dogra.
On November 6, 2024, Selection Grade Constable Perwaiz Iqbal and accomplices were apprehended with 33 grams of heroin in FIR No. 128/2024 under the NDPS Act.
On November 12, 2024, another constable, Mohd Mukhtiyar, was arrested with 15 grams of heroin under FIR No. 155/2024.
The ongoing operations are being directly supervised by SP City North and SSP Jammu, ensuring meticulous attention to both backward and forward linkages of these cases.
Uncovering the Financial Web:
In a bid to dismantle the financial backbone of the drug syndicates, the police have initiated an inquiry into the illicit properties acquired by the arrested individuals. Efforts are underway to attach these properties under the NDPS Act to eliminate the economic incentives driving the trade.
Community’s Response:
The public has widely appreciated the police’s swift and decisive action. The arrest of these “black sheep,” including law enforcement personnel involved in drug peddling, underscores the commitment of the Jammu Police to eradicate the drug menace and restore faith in the system.
A Warning to Peddlers:
The Sub-Division City West has issued a stern warning to all drug peddlers: “Abstain from this immoral trade or face the full force of the law.” The crackdown will continue relentlessly, ensuring that no individual, regardless of their position or connections, is spared if found complicit in the narcotics trade.
The Bigger Picture:
As heroin-related overdose deaths rise, the police’s proactive approach reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at not only curbing the supply of narcotics but also addressing the devastating societal impacts. Each arrest serves as a reminder of the administration’s resolve to protect the youth of Jammu from falling prey to this scourge.
The ongoing efforts have reinvigorated public trust and stand as a testament to the commitment of the Jammu Police to ensure a drug-free future.
