Jammu: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is set to observe World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, through a series of citywide activities aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging citizens to adopt sustainable practices. The campaign, guided by this year’s global theme of ending plastic pollution, will focus on mobilizing communities to reduce plastic waste and prevent it from entering the city’s water bodies and drainage systems.
Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav, while announcing the programme, emphasized the corporation’s commitment to not only marking the occasion but also promoting a culture of long-term environmental responsibility among the people of Jammu. The initiative aims to discourage the use of plastic, highlight the dangers of improper waste disposal, and educate citizens on the importance of responsible waste management.
A significant part of the campaign will involve the active participation of Swachhata Champions, who will lead awareness drives across various wards. These community leaders will work closely with local residents to spread information on plastic alternatives, proper garbage disposal methods, and the impact of pollution on public health and the ecosystem.
To integrate environmental goals with social welfare, citizens will be encouraged to donate reusable items at Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) centres. These centres will collect household goods in good condition, which will then be distributed to underprivileged families across the city.
Schools in Jammu will also play a key role in the campaign by hosting “Waste to Art” competitions. These events are designed to inspire students to creatively reuse waste materials, promoting both environmental consciousness and artistic innovation among the youth.
As part of the ongoing ‘Hum Badlenge AaDat’ programme, the JMC will organize nature walks across selected green zones in the city. These walks will serve as educational outings to reinforce the importance of segregating dry and wet waste, while also promoting healthy and eco-friendly lifestyles.
Additionally, a major plantation drive will be undertaken across Jammu with thousands of saplings to be planted in parks, public spaces, and road medians. The move is expected to improve the city’s green cover and contribute to cleaner air and better urban biodiversity.
Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav stated that these initiatives are intended to spark a lasting behavioral shift, encouraging every resident of Jammu to become a stakeholder in building a cleaner, greener city. The Municipal Corporation has extended an open invitation to all citizens to participate in the events and help make this year’s World Environment Day a meaningful milestone in Jammu’s environmental journey.
