Srinagar: In a move that has sparked widespread outrage, the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar will remain shut on the holy night of Shab-e-Qadr, following orders from the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The mosque’s managing body, the Auqaf, confirmed today that authorities directed the closure, prohibiting congregational prayers and supplications on one of Islam’s holiest nights.
Shab-e-Qadr, believed to be the night when the Holy Quran was revealed, holds immense spiritual significance, drawing thousands of worshippers to seek divine blessings. The closure of Kashmir’s grand mosque on this occasion has been condemned as “insensitive” by religious and community leaders, who argue that it deprives the faithful of a centuries-old tradition.
While officials have yet to cite specific reasons for the decision, the move has triggered strong reactions from the public, with calls for reconsideration. As the night of divine mercy approaches, the faithful are left questioning why their place of worship has been sealed at a time when prayers are needed most.
