Jammu: In a bold and high-impact police action, Jammu Police on Tuesday arrested all key accused involved in the sensational Gangyal firing case, where a daylight shootout between rival criminal gangs left one gangster injured. The police operation, led under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu and SP South ,executed efficiently by SDPO Gandhi Nagar Sunil Jasrotia, has drawn widespread attention—not just for its swift results but also for the public shaming of arrested criminals as a deterrent against lawlessness.
The Incident: Daylight Gunfight in Gangyal
The incident that triggered this crackdown occurred recently in the Gangyal area of Jammu, where members of the notorious ANNDA gang opened fire in broad daylight, targeting another known criminal, Murga, who sustained bullet injuries in the attack. The brazen firing sent shockwaves across the city, underlining growing concerns about gang rivalry and rising street violence in Jammu’s urban pockets.
Harjot Singh ANNDA gangster, who had been evading arrest after the shootout, had gone underground, prompting a high-level police manhunt.
Swift Police Action and Arrests:
Acting on intelligence and with coordinated efforts from local units, Jammu Police launched a targeted operation that resulted in the arrest of all the accused involved in the firing. The arrests came under the leadership of SDPO Gandhi Nagar, whose tactical planning and on-ground execution ensured that the gang members were apprehended without collateral damage.
The operation was personally supervised by the SSP Jammu, who has been closely monitoring the surge in organized criminal activities in the region. This show of leadership from the top brass was pivotal in restoring a sense of control and security.
Public Parade of Criminals: A Deterrent Move
In a significant and controversial move, the arrested criminals were publicly paraded and reportedly beaten in public view, a tactic rarely employed in modern policing but intended to send a strong message: “No one is above the law.” Videos and images of the incident surfaced, showing police officers asserting their authority in front of onlookers, which has stirred a mix of public support and civil rights debate.
The SDPO Gandhi Nagar justified the move, stating that it was necessary to reassert public confidence in law enforcement and to warn others who believe they can terrorize the community without consequence.
Rising Gang Activity in Jammu:
Jammu, once known for its relative calm compared to other urban centers, has seen a surge in gang activity over the past year. Rivalries among local gangs have spilled into public spaces, with weapons being used with increasing impunity. Incidents like the Gangyal shootout reflect the emboldened attitude of criminal elements.
This rise in gang culture is believed to be fueled by a mix of local turf wars, extortion rackets, and the influence of gangsters operating from outside the region. Law enforcement agencies have been under pressure to act decisively before the situation spirals further.
Public and Political Response:
The public has responded positively to the police action, especially in areas affected by gang violence. Many residents have hailed the SSP Jammu and SDPO Gandhi Nagar for acting swiftly and decisively.
However, civil liberties advocates have raised concerns about the public beating of suspects, emphasizing the importance of due process and legal norms. Legal experts argue that while strong policing is necessary, extra-judicial public punishment can set a dangerous precedent if not kept in check.
Looking Ahead
The Jammu Police’s approach in the Gangyal case serves both as a warning to criminals and a signal to the public that law enforcement will not tolerate disorder. As investigations continue, further arrests are not ruled out, and police sources indicate that action against other gangs is in the pipeline.
With crime syndicates being emboldened by perceived impunity, such assertive actions may become a new policing norm in the city. However, balancing enforcement with constitutional safeguards will remain key in maintaining legitimacy and public trust.
