In a chilling reminder of nature’s unpredictable might, tragedy engulfed Chashoti village in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar district this afternoon as a monstrous cloudburst unleashed a torrent of water, triggering a flash flood that claimed at least 38 lives including two Central Industrial Security Force officers and left 100 others injured.
Eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos and fear as muddy waters swept through Chashoti village, the very gateway to the Machail Mata Yatra, engulfing homes and scattering people in moments. “Bodies are still being recovered and there are fears the death toll could climb further,” cautioned an official from the police control room, highlighting the scale of devastation gripping the valley.
Amid rising panic, the Army joined forces with first responders, braving perilous conditions to rescue stranded villagers. Heart-wrenching visuals punctuated the rescue children led to safety atop makeshift rafts, families clinging to hope as their homes vanished beneath the deluge.
Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Pankaj Sharma, confirmed the magnitude: “A flash flood has occurred at Chashoti area in Kishtwar, which is the starting point of the Machail Mata Yatra. Rescue Operations have been started.”
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his sorrow on X, underscoring commitment and compassion:
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. The situation is being monitored closely. Rescue and relief operations are underway. Every possible assistance will be provided to those in need.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conveyed his condolences and swiftly acted to honor the victims and their families. The ceremonies marking Independence Day have been pared down morning cultural events canceled, and the evening “At Home” tea party shelved:
“In light of the tragedy caused by the cloudburst in Kishtwar I have taken the decision to cancel the ‘At Home tea party tomorrow evening. We have also decided not to go ahead with the cultural events during the morning Independence Day celebrations.
The formal events speech, march past, etc., will go ahead as planned,” the chief minister announced on X.
