A powerful windstorm swept across Jammu and Samba districts on Monday, causing extensive damage to public property, infrastructure, and lives. The high-velocity winds, accompanied by a brief thundershower, began their rampage around 5:45 PM, leaving a trail of destruction and power outages in their wake.
The tempest uprooted a mobile phone tower installed on a rooftop near Shaheedi Chowk, crushing five parked cars under the debris. Additionally, a wall collapse due to the winds added to the damage. Scores of electricity poles and trees were torn from the ground, disrupting the daily life and causing widespread chaos.
Amid the havoc, the storm brought a tragic loss of life. In the Gangyal area, an unidentified laborer succumbed to a fatal fall. His body was promptly transported to the GMC hospital by the local police. In another incident, a person in the Belicharana area fell from the rooftop of his house, sustaining critical injuries.
The severe winds did not spare the power infrastructure. Power Development Department (PDD) officials reported significant damage to power transmission lines and installations, leading to prolonged electricity disruptions in many regions. Bari Brahmana, Vijaypur, Bishnah, Sainik Colony, Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Bakshi Nagar, Rehari, Rajpura, Shakti Nagar, Roop Nagar, Janipur, and Muthi were among the hardest-hit areas, plunging into darkness as soon as the winds struck.
Superintending Engineer Karam Chand informed the media, “We are still assessing the losses caused to power infrastructure due to the high-velocity winds. Restoration efforts are ongoing, and we aim to restore power to many areas by tonight.” Despite these efforts, by 11 PM, several areas like Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Bari Brahmana, Bishnah, and Sainik Colony were still without electricity, highlighting the magnitude of the storm’s impact.
The thundershower that followed the winds offered some respite from the scorching heat that had gripped the region, but the damage left behind was immense. Communication towers, trees, and electric poles were seen toppled across the city, reflecting the storm’s ferocity. In Bawe Wali Gali, another communication tower collapse added to the infrastructure woes.
Residents experienced the brunt of nature’s fury, as high winds uprooted trees, damaged electric poles, and snapped power supply wires, complicating the restoration process. The efforts to bring back normalcy continued late into the night, with partial power restoration achieved in some areas.
The aftermath of the storm has left Jammu grappling with significant infrastructure challenges and a poignant reminder of nature’s unpredictable wrath. The authorities continue to work tirelessly to restore power and assess the full extent of the damages, while the community comes together to rebuild and support those affected by this sudden calamity.
In a city already dealing with the intense summer heat, this unexpected storm has added a layer of adversity, but the resilience and spirit of the people of Jammu remain unshaken. As recovery efforts progress, the community stands united, braving the challenges ahead with fortitude and hope.
