Finance Minister Calls For Stable, Simple Tax Regime At ‘PRARAMBH 2026’ Launch

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday launched ‘PRARAMBH 2026’, a nationwide awareness campaign by the Income Tax Department to educate citizens about the provisions of the new Income Tax Act, 2025, which will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
The campaign, spanning print, television, radio, digital and social media platforms, aims to build awareness about the new tax regime through simplified communication, guidance material and public engagement initiatives.
On the occasion, the Finance Minister also unveiled the upgraded Income Tax Website 2.0, designed to offer improved usability, simpler navigation and efficient service delivery as part of the government’s digital transformation efforts.
Addressing the gathering, Sitharaman called for a tax administration that is empathetic, technology-driven and based on trust. She stressed the need for stability and simplicity in the new tax law, cautioning against frequent amendments and underlining that ease and clarity should encourage voluntary compliance.
Highlighting the broader reform agenda, she said both direct and indirect tax systems are being overhauled simultaneously for the first time, with a focus on making them more citizen-centric and accessible.
The campaign includes taxpayer guidance through brochures, FAQs, tutorial videos and multilingual communication material in 10 regional languages, apart from English and Hindi, to ensure wider outreach.
Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava said the new law represents a shift towards a simpler and more user-friendly tax system. He noted that over 300 workshops will be conducted across the country under the PRARAMBH initiative to enhance awareness and gather stakeholder feedback.
Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Ravi Agrawal emphasised a citizen-centric approach guided by the principle of “Nagrik Devo Bhava”. He said the campaign aims to ensure clear and accessible communication while easing compliance for taxpayers.
As part of the initiative, an AI-enabled chatbot ‘Kar Saathi’ has been launched to assist taxpayers with queries related to the new Act, rules and forms. Support will also be provided through Aaykar Seva Kendras across the country.
The government also highlighted the use of digital tools and MyGov engagement initiatives to connect with citizens, particularly youth and professionals, and promote awareness about the new tax framework.
