Jammu/Kashmir: As Jammu and Kashmir braces for its highly anticipated Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the Valley is making waves in political circles. With a clear focus on aligning with the INDIA alliance in all upcoming Assembly elections, the Congress leader is strategizing for a significant push against the incumbent forces.
During his visit to Srinagar, insiders reveal that Rahul Gandhi had planned a crucial meeting with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti to discuss election strategy. However, an unexpected twist came when NC patron Farooq Abdullah intervened. His influence ensured that the meeting didn’t take place during Rahul’s stay in the Valley. The National Conference (NC) is pitching for an NC-Congress alliance, which conflicts with Rahul’s broader INDIA alliance, where the PDP also plays a key role. Yet, sources confirm that despite Farooq’s maneuvering, Rahul Gandhi spoke to Mehbooba Mufti over the phone, engaging in a detailed conversation about the future of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
Further reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that no candidate from the Congress or NC should contest against Iltija Mufti in Bijbehara or against veteran leader Mohd. Yousuf Tarigami in the upcoming polls, ensuring a seamless path for these prominent figures. Mehbooba Mufti is expected to meet Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi soon to solidify their understanding.
Meanwhile, the Congress party is gearing up for another crucial step. A delegation led by senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid is set to visit Kashmir to finalize seat-sharing agreements with the National Conference. Disagreements over a dozen constituencies are proving to be a stumbling block, and the visit aims to resolve these tensions before formalizing the alliance structure.
The atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir is electrifying, with political anticipation mounting across the state. Opinion makers, civil society members, and political analysts are keeping a close eye on developments. On the ground, there is a prevailing sense that these elections are not going to be an easy win for any party, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many citizens, distressed and disillusioned with political promises, suggest that a fractured mandate is on the horizon, similar to the outcome seen in Punjab’s recent polls.
Adding another twist to the already complex election narrative, the All J&K Sikh Coordination Committee has declared it will not contest the upcoming elections. Avtar Singh Khalsa, the committee’s advisor, made the announcement during an interview with a local Punjabi news channel. However, Khalsa remained ambiguous about whether the committee would support any particular political party, leaving many in the Sikh community uncertain about their political direction.
With the common man in Jammu and Kashmir increasingly agitated and frustrated, it seems that the election may be one of the most unpredictable the state has ever seen. Neither the BJP, Congress, PDP, nor NC can claim dominance, as public sentiment remains fractured and fluid. The stakes are high, and no political player can afford complacency. The outcome is likely to redefine the political landscape of the region, ushering in a new era of governance.
