Jammu: The District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC) Jammu has strongly condemned the recent attack on a Sikh businessman and his brother in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, terming the incident as a blatant act of violence that has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.
In an official letter addressed to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President S. Harjinder Singh Dhami, DGPC Jammu expressed its anguish over the desecration of the victims’ turbans and unshorn hair during the assault, calling it a direct attack on Sikh identity and dignity.
The attack, which has sparked outrage among the Sikh community, has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of minorities in Uttarakhand. DGPC Jammu emphasized that the incident not only violated the victims’ personal rights but also threatened the broader principles of religious harmony and coexistence.
Commendation for SGPC’s Prompt Action:
In the letter, DGPC Jammu appreciated the SGPC’s immediate intervention in the matter. The SGPC’s swift outreach to the victims, assurance of legal and financial support, and direct communication with the Uttarakhand Chief Minister and police authorities have been widely welcomed.
“The SGPC’s unwavering commitment to upholding Sikh dignity and demanding justice serves as a beacon of hope for the community in difficult times,” said DGPC Jammu President S. Ranjeet Singh Tohra.
Call for Justice and Preventive Measures:
The DGPC Jammu has extended full support to SGPC’s demand for a fair and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice at the earliest. The letter further urged the Uttarakhand government to take immediate and strict action against the accused, while calling for concrete steps to prevent such hate-driven incidents in the future.
“It is imperative that the authorities not only punish those responsible but also take proactive measures to safeguard the religious sentiments and security of all communities,” the letter stated.
Community Outrage and Solidarity:
The incident has triggered widespread anger across the Sikh community, with Sikh organizations across the country demanding accountability from the Uttarakhand administration. Several religious bodies and human rights groups have echoed the demand for justice, warning against the growing atmosphere of intolerance and communal hatred.
DGPC Jammu reiterated that such acts of violence are not just an attack on individuals, but an affront to the entire Sikh community’s religious identity.
Appeal for Communal Harmony:
While condemning the incident, DGPC Jammu also called upon the wider society to uphold communal harmony and mutual respect. The organization appealed to the Uttarakhand government to strengthen law enforcement mechanisms to protect minority rights and prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
The DGPC Jammu’s strong stance highlights the Sikh community’s zero-tolerance approach to any form of religious disrespect or violence. With the SGPC leading the legal and humanitarian efforts, the community remains united in its pursuit of justice while calling for greater awareness and respect for all religious identities in the country.
