Changthang’s Voice Rises in Tharuk and Yerath: Real Issues, Real Action in Viksit Krishi Abhiyaan
The morning session of Day 09 of the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyaan was successfully conducted at Tharuk village, with active participation from farmers and officials representing multiple line departments.
The event was spearheaded by KVK Nyoma, under the leadership of Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, who elaborated on the functioning of KVK and the adoption of the cluster method in village development.
Representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Sheep Husbandry were also present and provided in-depth information on various government schemes and available support.
The Animal Husbandry Department shared updates on the provision of tarpaulins, animal kits, subsidies on cross-breeds, and interventions for nutritional deficiencies, watery eyes, and weakness in animals. Dr. Shakeel highlighted curative measures to address these regional livestock challenges. Additionally, Dr. Stanzin Diskit, Pathologist, addressed the issue of aphid infestations in greenhouse crops and recommended suitable management strategies.
A highly engaging farmer-official interaction followed, where local farmers raised pressing concerns such as the need for “Shepherds Yakzi and Barzi” for yaks and cattle, demand for high-quality vegetable seeds, and the threat posed by stray dogs to livestock. A major concern was the lack of compensation for yaks killed in the previous year, and the absence of a nearby veterinary facility, forcing injured animals to travel long distances for treatment. The non-availability of essential medicines and lack of telecommunication networks in case of predatory attacks were also highlighted.
Farmers further requested the establishment of an Animal Care Centre in the village and appealed for availability of planting material for horticultural crops to boost productivity. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Tashi, who appreciated the active participation of 31 households, the support of the Goba members, and the overall cooperation of the villagers in making the day’s Abhiyaan a success.
The evening session of the Viksit Sankalp program was successfully conducted at Yearth village. The event saw the participation of officials from various departments, including Agriculture, Sheep Husbandry, and Animal Husbandry, who highlighted several government schemes aimed at supporting farmers. An interactive session between scientists and farmers was held, during which several key issues were raised by the farming community.
These included pest infestation in Ladakh greenhouses, aphid problems, a lack of awareness regarding financial loan procedures, the need for replacement of old polythene sheets in greenhouses, and a demand for knapsack sprayers to aid in better crop management.
The session witnessed a total participation of 40 individuals. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Tashi of KVK, who acknowledged the contributions of the Goba members and all participating officials.
