Centre Organises ‘Celebration Of Intergenerational Bonds’ Programme In Madhya Pradesh
The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, organised a programme titled ‘Celebration of Intergenerational Bonds’ on December 22 at the Old Tehsil Complex, Mehal Gate, in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, with the aim of strengthening emotional, social and cultural ties between different generations and promoting active and dignified ageing.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar graced the event, which was attended by senior government officials, representatives of social organisations, students, families and senior citizens, including grandparents of participating children.
The programme focused on fostering affection, dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect between generations, highlighting the role of intergenerational engagement in preserving values, traditions and social cohesion. Officials said such initiatives contribute to building an inclusive and elder-friendly society by encouraging community participation and active ageing.
Addressing the gathering, Virendra Kumar said senior citizens are custodians of experience, wisdom and cultural values and represent a vital strength of the nation. He stressed the importance of community-based initiatives and intergenerational interaction in ensuring healthy and dignified ageing.
The Minister highlighted key initiatives of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, including the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, under which assistive devices related to mobility, vision and hearing are provided to senior citizens. He informed that more than 7.28 lakh elderly persons have benefited from the scheme so far. He also referred to the strengthening of Elderline 14567, which has received over 27 lakh calls, offering support, guidance and emergency assistance to senior citizens.
The event featured cultural performances by students, interactive sessions with senior citizens, a collective pledge-taking ceremony and a walkathon led by the Union Minister, aimed at promoting intergenerational harmony and social cohesion.
Ministry said the programme successfully brought together senior citizens, children, youth and community members on a shared platform of respect, participation and cooperation. Through cultural expression, dialogue and physical activity, the event reinforced the message that intergenerational harmony is essential for building a healthy, inclusive and compassionate society.
