The Paris 2024 Olympics are officially scheduled to begin today, July 26, with an elaborate opening ceremony along the Seine River in France. However, the Games ‘unofficially’ kicked off on July 24 with football and rugby sevens competitions, followed by women’s handball and archery individual ranking rounds on July 25. Starting events before the official opening ceremony is a common practice, particularly for football, due to the physical demands of the sport. Teams cannot play matches every day, so scheduling them in advance ensures at least 48 hours of recovery time between games. Benjamin Ceugnart, Competitions Calendar Project Manager at Paris 2024, elaborated on this scheduling approach: “Since the Barcelona 1992 Games, football has started ahead of the opening ceremony. Players need a recovery period of at least 48 hours, so men’s teams play two days before, and women’s teams one day before the opening ceremony.” Why archery, handball and rugby have started early? India’s first event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is archery, taking place at the Invalides venue, which is situated next to the Seine River where the opening ceremony will be held. Due to security reasons, the rankings rounds were scheduled a day before the grand ceremony. The early starts for rugby sevens and handball are new this year. Ceugnart pointed out that this change was necessary for smoother logistics, as these events share venues with athletics and weightlifting in Paris, necessitating an early start. It’s important to note that there will be no elimination rounds or medals awarded before the official opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

India will have a strong presence at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, with 78 athletes and officials from 12 disciplines participating in the Parade of Nations. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 pm IST. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha and Chef-de-Mission Gagan Narang have prioritized athletes in the composition of the contingent. All available athletes will participate, though some have opted out to focus on their upcoming competitions. PV Sindhu, star shuttler, and Sharath Kamal, veteran table tennis player, will serve as India’s flag-bearers, marking a historic first for their respective sports at such a prestigious event. India has already made its mark in the Games, with both men’s and women’s archery teams directly qualifying for the quarter-finals. The country’s first shot at a medal will come on July 27 in the mixed team air rifle event, featuring two Indian teams: Sandeep Singh/Elavenil Valarivan and Arjun Babuta/Ramita Jindal. The Indian contingent for Paris 2024 includes 117 athletes across various disciplines. Doubts remained on weather the event could be held on the river on Friday (July 26) in a tense security context and a plan B had been drawn up. Macron also said that though he profoundly disagrees with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister would be welcome to attend the ceremony in Paris if he wanted to. He further welcomed singer Celine Dion’s presence in Paris, saying it would be ‘great’ to see the ‘huge artist’ attend the ceremony as well. The Games start on July 26 with an opening ceremony that will see thousands of athletes and performers paraded along a 6-km (4-mile) stretch of the river.
